Just after I moved into my new house in Dec 03, someone gave me a flowering plant in a small pot; the size that you would normally buy herb seedlings in. The plant was about 8-10cm tall with a couple of flowers on it. My section was bare land with just grass and weeds, so the little plant stayed in its pot, forlon and forgotten. At one stage I thought it was dead, but just left it where it was and it came back to life in the next rains. And it always had flowers on it. I would look at it occasionally and think to myself "I must find somewhere to plant that." Well, I planted it about 3 months ago and it's gone mad!! It's now about 30cm tall with a 50-60cm spread. Here's a picture of it, so if you know what it is, please let me know. I am going to try growing some cuttings as I'd love a long low 'hedge' under some of my taller plants.

Howdee Lorna
Me suspects that is a picture of a Cuphea I think it's botanical name is - but it's common name is The Cigarette Plant - for obvious reasons - however I may be wrong so looking forward to your other replies.
Great idea taking a photo of it for us to get a better idea. Whatever it turns out to be it certainly enjoys where you have it - and that wonderful Whitianga climate.............
Cheers

That is definitely a cigarette plant - and even here in Hamilton it flowers practically all year around. I love them, we have the common red, a beautiful purple, the pink and the salmon. What we have done is bunched the different colours together, so they are all mixed and have them under a hedge.
They can take a hardy pruning. If you would ever like to have other colours Lorna, let me know if you want some cuttings.
Cheers, Irene

Oh, thank you Irene. I would love some other colours. I will probably be over Hamilton way towards the end of September, if not before, and I'll pm you before I come. Be great to see you again. Thank you for your very kind offer, and thank you everyone else for your input.
