Dried chick peas will germinate if they haven’t been heat treated (some are as part of the bio security entry requirements). The plants need a hot and fairly dry summer to perform well. Most parts of NZ should be fine. However, they do not produce high yields per plant so you might need to devote rather a lot of space to them to make it worthwhile.
