Where are you - it makes a difference, especially if you are in a frost-free spot then you should be sweet. Rock melons are supposed to be impossible to grow outside where we live - Canterbury Plains - however I managed to do so the year before last. The secret was to plant them in a very sheltered spot through black plastic and water daily. The black plastic keeps their roots snuggly and warm.
Last year, I tried to grow them in the tunnel house, however aphids destroyed them, so this year I'm going to try growing watermelons through weed mat.
Plant out after the last risk of frost though, or you will lose the lot of them!
