Help me ID tree - NZ native? October 27, 2009 06:52AM |

Can someone please help me top ID this tree we have growing at Opua?
It's a tall, bushy tree with a flower similar to a Hebe (a fluffy brush flower) however the leaves are different to a Hebe.
See it here [picasaweb.google.com]
It seems to flower almost all year, with the best flowers through Summer. The bees love it, as do Waxeyes and Sparrows.
Thanks, in advance.
All the best - Julie

Hi gardengirly, it's either a Kamahi (Weinmannia racemosa) or a Towai/Tawhero(Weinmannia silvicola), most likely the latter in Opua. Very nice tree. I have a Kamahi. They're available for sale. If you do have trouble getting one, Taupo Native Plant Nursery would supply one easily. [www.tauponativeplant.co.nz]

Hi J1
That's great - thank you so much.
I've looked further and can see its a Kamahi Weinmannia racemosa. The leaf stems are red for some of the year and I see that is a characteristic of the Kahi. The leaf shape of the Weinmannia silvicola - towai, tawhero, is different.
We actually have a big tree of the Kamahi at Opua, however thanks for the link to the Taupo Native Plant Nursery. I'll keep that for future reference.
Kind regards - Julie
