We have a massive flax problem in our garden. Our house was built by private builder as a spec home and he did the landscaping which included a lot of flax (in one garden in particular but there are a few others as well).
They would be impossible to just dig out. Our thoughts are that we will chainsaw them to near the ground and then hire a small digger to dig them out. As both the chainsaw and digger will be hired - is it okay to use a chainsaw on flax?
Has anyone any advice re flax? Thanks.

Flax is so fibrous it will jam a chainsaw in about 15 seconds.
You may be surprised at how (relatively) inexpensive hiring a guy with a small digger to remove it is. A couple of years ago we looked at renting a digger to do some work, including removing , but then called a couple of small digger & truck operators and it only cost $80/hr for one to do the work. Took him 1.5 hours + $80 travel. For us to rent a digger for a whole day (which is how long it would have taken us since we didn't know what we were doing) was in the region of $400.

If you're in Auckland, you could get a quote from these people [treeking.co.nz]

Thanks J1. We're in Lincoln, Canterbury but I'm sure the link could be handy for other members here.

In general, to solve this problem, it is best to use the appropriate equipment following the example of rototiller machines. But it is also necessary to understand it at a fairly good level, although you can also use sites of the type Jonsguide
