Where are the bees? I have plants with flowers, shrubs and trees with flowers but here in West Auckland suburbia I don't have any bees, not even the nasty wool carder bees! I thought of getting a hive, but being allergic to stings I didn't think that was a sensible solution. Hopefully they are hiding from the wind and will appear any day.

If you have the chance to get a hive or two, I say do try it. We have had 4 hives for many years, and I have been stung, but only when I try working them without proper gear on. I have never been stung in the garden with many bees around, they are not aggressive. It is usually when I am taking their honey from them, so if a sting or two happens, I figure it is justifiable on their part. It is my fault for not suiting up properly, and I am taking their summers work. I haven't been stung in a couple years, getting older, slower, and maybe a bit smarter. But also the added advantage of over 300 pounds of honey along with the pollination makes it a no brainer.

Helen, from what I understand when bees swarm they aren't really interested in people and aren't dangerous. They're just moving in a group to a new location, not aggressive or anything to be concerned about.
We live about 200m away from a commercial honey operation, so have no problems with lack of bees. We've had a couple of swarms come over our property in the last couple of months (the manager has been very busy and didn't get to splitting the hives in time) and I've been outside for both. No stings, no scary attacking.. just lots of bees buzzing around making a heck of a noise. They passed over our house in about 5 minutes then settled high in a tree on a neighbouring property.
Before we moved here and found ourselves with a plentiful supply of pollinators, we were going to get a managed hive, and if we leave here, I'm sure we'll look into it again.
