I really like the fragrance of port wine magnolia and at the moment I seem to go from block to block inhaling their fragrance as I walk the dog.
My MIL couldn't stand them, she said the fragrance made her nauseous and someone the other day said the same.
What category are you in - like them or not?

absolutely adore the smell. Likewise when walking the dog, I just love it when I come across one

I tend toward your mother in law's stance, although not as vehemently. I love the scent of other Michelias and Magnolias, but the port wine cultivar smells to me like stale grape juice.

I have one right beside my house, and I love the scent, as well as the flowers themselves, which are so delicate in their form compared to most other magnolias!

I have a Port Wine Magnolia growing beside a lime tree and they are both currently in full bloom. I thought it was the lime tree giving off the sweet smell but perhaps it's the magnolia. Must go and smell the blooms of each and see which one has the heavenly smell.
