Su, I find the Mitre 10 website excellent for Gardening tips, and a month by month calender. Here is a cut and paste on what they recommend for winter spraying
For all of their beauty, roses do require regular spraying in order to remain pest and disease free. Winter is a good time for spraying - to catch any over-wintering insect eggs or fungal spores. A good general clean up spray to apply now is Copper Oxychloride or Champ DP and Protector Oil (or Conqueror Oil). I mix these together and spray until droplets start running off the plant. Super Copper is a protectant that controls black spot. Protector Oil helps control mites and scale insect. Both are organic and safe to use.
and if you click here [www.mitre10.co.nz] it will take you to the homepage of their garden tips website
cheers,Irene

Hi Su,
I have just given my roses their first spray with llime sulphar. The surrounding dirt as well. This puts them to sleep. I find the liquid Yates one goodl.
Now I have started to prune.
End of June I spray with copper end of July I spray again with copper & Oil
When they start to make spring growth start using Shield or Super shield spray. Suppose to do this every 2-3 weeks.
Hope you enjoy your roses. They are a lot of work but worth it.
