However, bread and butter pudding is really a way to use up leftover bread rather making or buying it specially for the purpose. Makes it an expensive dessert if you have to make or buy the bread specially.

Lorna is exactly right. It's missing the point to buy bread especially for bread and butter pudding: she could use whatever bread she has left over (or even left over uniced cake works well if the amount of sugar in the custard is reduced and no butter is added). If she wants an extra-rich pudding just use more butter.
