Because of the rain around at the moment I had to pick some golden queen peaches off my tree today. They are 3/4 ripe but I was worried about brown rot and that the rain could split them.I want to give some away but do think by leaving them sitting around inside that they will ripen fully? They are for eating fresh not bottling.

Marylew as long as they have signs of ripening they will ripen up more once picked i.e. golden tinges on the peaches and giving them a gentle squeeze with your fingers - there should be some 'give' . I do that with the peaches the wind has blown off the tree and they are at that stage of ripening. Sit them in a warm dry area or on a windowsill not touching each other so that and the air can circulate around them and they dry properly. Brown rot is a real nuisance and can decimate overnight what could be great crop of peaches.

Dawn.

Thanks Dawn now I feel better about them. They do have the golden tinges and I will do as you say and put them on a window sill.earlier in the week I had picked some for my daughter and already told her I had them for her but didn't deliver them.Someone else knocked on my door and I gave them away. Now she's asking where the peaches are but I feel I need to ripen them first.Maybe I will confess and she can put them on her window sill. Thanks again.

I have to say that although they will colour up and look ripe they simply won't have the flavour they would have had if they'd been able to be left on the tree (appreciating that this wasn't an option for you). I absolutely adore GQ peaches, but find that supermarket ones often have virtually no flavour as they are picked too early.
I was musing the other day about the need to make a TV series about how to tell when fruit and veges are properly ripe and flavourful, perhaps if people knew how to pick properly ripe produce there would be pressure on producers to provide better quality fruit and vege... (sorry off on a tangent there!).

I can wholeheartedly endorse what CROLYN C says. Webb's is the place to go to when ordering fruit. The Wanaka people I know all drive over to Cromwell to purchase from Webb's and bypass a much larger orchard on the way there. I buy from Webb's seconds bin when wanting fruit for jam and chutney and that fruit often looks as good as what the local supermarket sells at a high price. Their fruit tastes so much better than what I've bought from the supermarket when I needed something in a hurry. It's so disappointing when you pay so much for too early picked tasteless fruit and it's sad that the cost of inferior is too much for many when we grow it in such abundance.
