If I knew and loved the restaurant I might order, otherwise I wouldn't. Those menu descriptions are not enticing and mostly conjure up an image of a large plate with little piles of ingredients dotted on it.
And what is an oat? One grain?
I must say some of the Rothko mains sound confronting too - "beef tallow bread" .

Helen it's happening over here in Adelaide and I find it pretty damn annoying - are we supposed to just know what this 'mystery box' of ingredients is going to become? Or is the chef going to wing it at service?
And I see the last line on the menu has the prices separated - so do they mean that the NZ cheeses are $12; the housemade crackers $20 and the preserves $28? I'm sure it probably means 1 - 3 different cheeses but it's just dumb.
And while I'm having a bit of a rant (sorry), I'm looking for a pub in the Adelaide Hills with an open fire to go to with friends in a couple of weeks, and a number of the fancy ones have 'Jospered' this and 'Jospered' that meat dishes, with no explanation. I must be a real peasant as I'd never heard of it. Apparently it's some sort of fancy grill/oven thing.

I don't think much of it, either. I'd be asking so many questions. Next thing it will be in text language.
I enjoy casual or rustic if that is the occasion and at first I thought that it must have been written by someone for whom English is a second language.
ps I had to Google 'jospered'. Then I didn't know what the HoReCa sector was/is...I even had to Google that.

We don't eat out often enough to have encountered that - or maybe it hasn't hit Hamilton as yet. But if I did see that type of menu anywhere, I would insist on knowing what the meal that finally came to my table would actually be. And if they were hesitant in divulging.. .I would be seriously inclined to walk out.

Well, I would order the first one
And in thinking that, I thought what if I'm a chef and I'm trying to think of something new and I want to use this ingredient, and this, and this, and put them together in some different way - constructed...deconstructed......- some mandarin and what can I do with the mandarin, some yoghurt but not just any old yoghurt, a dash of honey, and rosemary goes so well with honey and something different....sourdough..... It's not a pie, it's not a mousse, it's not a cheesecake. I don't want to box this dessert in by having to say it's a particular something....it's none of those old-named things...it's a construction......you're not getting a pie, nor a compote, don't think of those old things....you're getting mandarin, yoghurt, sourdough, honey, rosemary.... flavours, textures, visuals, shapes, sounds, colours....food.....nothing required to conform to a name.

From what we could gather by looking at other diners, the Chocolate option was a tart and the Sourdough possibly a bread and butter pudding type dessert..... So the list is only part of the information, not tasting platters, not deconstructed but actual recipes.
The singular "oat" did make us laugh, visualising a single rolled oat on the plate.
