Hi there, I recently bought a bottle of 'Cortas" brand Pomegranate molasses from New World and have discovered it's really quite nasty - tastes sour and a bit metallic. Sadly I can't return it as I no longer have the receipt.
Please could somebody recommend a nicer variety, and also maybe where I can buy it? I am in Auckland. Mt Albert. Thanks muchly!

The brands I mostly have are Lebanon Gardens (Lebanon) and 1 & 1 (Iran) but I can't remember where I specifically got them as I tend to pick them up when I see them and end up with a massive stockpile.
I suggest you look in Caspian Traders in Dominion Road, and the bulk food shop in Dominion Road near the corner of Walters Rd (I think it is called Bulk Savings). Otherwise any of the Middle Eastern food markets in Stoddard Rd should have it.
I've used Cortas in the past and thought it was okay. Are you maybe using too much of it? It can be nasty and overpowering when too dominant.
Another thought - while you are looking for pomegranate molasses keep an eye open for date molasses. It is wonderful! It adds a roundness to salad dressings without any sharpness, and gives depth to tagines and other meaty dishes.

Here's a link to Bulk Savings. It is an excellent shop, not particularly cheap but very high quality and a wide range of Middle Eatsern and European ingredients, plus Megachef soy sauce and fish sauce.

Mine is Lebanon Gardens and I bought it from a very small, 'Gourmet' shop here in Whitianga, which has since changed hands a few times and has morphed into a GE, GM and gluten free 'health food' type shop. I don't know if they still stock it as I haven't been in there for quite some time. I don't think they do international condiments anymore.

HI.I had this problem when I couldn't get the Al-rabih one I used to get at new world. Some one got the cortes one for me and I didn't even like the look of it in the bottle, got two I haven't even opened, I searched high and low on the net and found the Al_rahib one In Dantes fine foods Cambridge. Very good service online. $10.99 or there abouts a bottle. The Al-rahib brand also had rose-water, orange water etc at new world but don't seem to stock now. only the cortes pomegranate one.Take the time to have a nosy at Dantes , lots of goodies online. I don't live anywhere near there but my goods were here the next day, and that's rural delivery, just a little mix up with quantity but that was sorted and dispatched next day , so good service.

Interesting comment about the Al-rahib products. The shop I buy from used to stock both the Al-rahib and Cortes products (Rosewater, Orange blossom water and Pomegranate molasses) and ditched the Al-rahib in favour of Cortes. When I am next in Dunedin or Christchurch I shall see if I can get the Lebanon Gardens brand so that I can compare the brands.

I got mine from a shop in Pakuranga which does only Middle Eastern stuff. The brand is Al Kouroum and is delicious. I can't remember the price but it was cheap. They also do really excellent sumac and have about a million other spices. It's called Pita House and is in the small group of shops on Reeves Rd just behind Pakuranga Shopping Centre. Worth a trip if you need Middle Eastern stuff. .
