Any DONUT lovers out there?
Major Toms in Albany does the best custard donut ever - not to sweet, quite large and lots of vanilla custard.

I do like the Bavarian cream ones at Dunkin Donuts too but the ones above are so much better. The one at the French Bakery La Tropezienne in Browns Bay are on my list as well.

I see on Facebook that Gourmet Gannet does a delicious looking on at the Hobsonville markets - MUST TRY!

As we were out in Manukau we ventured off to find Krispy Kreme. It was so busy we went through the drive through. My kids chose 2 each in a 4 pack and they raved about them BUT Im not convinced.
I didnt eat them, too much food colouring and extra guff for my liking. I think the kids were just hyped up by the media around KK and the boxes and paper hats.

Any other donut recommendations?

I love the crullers at Dunkin Donuts. They're airy and not too sweet. I don't know if you can still get them, but I'm not going to go looking for them because they're just too tempting.

I'm just trying to figure out if I prefer yeast-based doughnuts or cake-type doughnuts. I think I like both because they're so different.

I like the yeast-based deep-fried doughnuts, injected with strawberry jam and rolled in caster sugar. Or split and filled with cream. Those bready, long doughnuts are not real doughnuts. They're buns split, filled with (usually) artificial cream, like Brylcream, and with just a tiny squirt of jam on top. Yuk!

Same as Lorna. And yes, those "bready, long doughnuts" are just cream buns in disguise. The American-style donuts (Dunkin, etc) are awful - their texture is all wrong, everything about them is wrong, wrong. wrong. Give Lorna and me an English doughnut...

Or the German version which is called Berliner Ballen and just like Lorna and J1 described.
