I’m looking at buying some feijoas trees. I like the idea of larger fruit, but wonder if that comes at a cost. Are they a pale imitation tastewise of the earlier varieties. Our current trees were fully grown 25 years ago, so don’t know how old they’d be. Suggestions of varieties would be good. I’m after three or four, ideally with staggered fruiting. Thanks, Janet

It depends what is a great feijoa to you. Gritty? Acidic? Super sweet? Soft? Firm?
I've just bought two new trees and decided on a Kaiteri and White Goose. I particularly wanted early varieties as I already have a late tree of unknown variety. I don't like a super gritty fruit. My husband bought home a bag from work that had large, round fruit with very white, non gritty flesh and they had the most amazing flavour. He didn't know who put the bag out, so couldn't ask about the variety. I know I've had Apollo and thought they were quite mediocre.

We have Unique because down south we need something that is ripening early. We had our first little harvest this year (all 21 of them) and the fruit was sweet, smooth and large. It’s a self fertile variety but we understand that you get a better crop if you have another bush. We are looking at Kaiteri or Anatoki. I sec ond Jenna’s recommendation. Country Trading in Nelson are excellent to deal with.
