Terry Tea Towels

Does anyone have a source for the older-style terry tea towels, they had pictures printed on them (what is being sold as 'terry' today is quite different.) We haven't been able to find any for over a year now...

I bought a pack of 3 terry tea towels from Countdown late last year.

The last time I bought tea towels I couldn't find the terry towel type so I bought a pack of 3 from New World.
They are the closest ones in texture that I could get. Sorry, I don't have the brand name.

I've sometimes picked them up at a Mitre 10 superstore.

I have to plead ignorance as to what constitutes a terry tea towel, but if you do a search on queenb.co.nz you will find 2 options

Thanks, Irene - I hadn't heard of this site. These are not the terry tea towels I am looking for, though...

Thanks, Carolyn - they are not showing on their website, but I will give them a ring & check...

Irene, a terry tea towel is made from material like a normal towel, but usually of a somewhat thinner weave. The ones on the Queen Bee website look more like Dobby tea towels, which are not fluffy like terry tea towels.

I found these on the 1-day.co.nz website, which I think is the sort of thing you are looking for, Rob. You could sign up with 1-day and hope they become available again soon. At $10 for 2 packs of 5 towels, they look to be a very good bargain!

I've seen some on the websites of Briscoes, The Warehouse and Farmers but they don't have pictures printed on the towels as you describe.

They're the only ones that dry properly aren't they. I managed to find a three-pack of them last year, I think in Briscoes, but lines of merchandise change like the weather these days and you can't find the same thing twice. They were thinner than they should be and also smaller than the average bear tea towel but I bought them anyway because they were GENUINE TERRY TEA TOWEL(!) after all......

For those not sure what terry tea towel is, as Lorna says, it's like a thinner version of bathroom towels. This tea towel image, particularly the stripes at the bottom, show the fabric quite well [www.aloveofdishtowels.com] and here are some vintage ones on ebay [www.ebay.com] Most of what comes up in a "terry tea towel" internet search are NOT terry tea towels.

If you can't find them, I'll have a look next time I'm there (I go quite often, they have a good cafésmiling smiley). They have a bunch of square display tables all the way down the front of the store and they're stuffed with a variety of things like cleaning cloths and plastic containers, and the terry tea towels turn up there sometimes (I don't think that stuff is the kind of thing that would make it onto their website). I buy them whenever I see them as you're right that they're hard to come by.

I still have terry teatowels that I bought back in the early 80s from Woolworths when it was a variety shop not supermarket. Not the prettiest designs but excellent for the dishes.

There are these on Trade Me [www.trademe.co.nz] . They do look thick too

Thanks so much to everyone for the helpful suggestions smiling smiley Our local Mitre 10 did not have any left, but eventually agreed to try other branches for us. They came up with 20* - only took a week to travel 1 hour's distance - unfortunately they are very poor quality & I can't see them lasting long, but I guess they are better than nothing.... We use them for drying pots, so as the good linen ones will last longer. I make most of our linen & cotton ones, so terry are the only sort we need to buy. [* Half will be for my brother, who kindly gave us the ones he had just bought when we couldn't find any a year ago. When he returned a week later, there were no more to be had...] Thanks again!

Our local Postie (used to be known as Postie Plus) store had good terry tea towels in stock today for $3 each. They had one nearly identical to the one in this picture with "The Simple Things" printed on it [www.chefscomplements.co.nz] , one with green and blue hens all over it, one with fruit all over it, etc.

They're a good size - 40 x 69cm and they're reasonably thick - certainly a much better size and quality than the Briscoes ones.
