Potato varieties in NZ
February 08, 2019 07:05AM

I'd really love to get my hands on some of the more common US varieties of potato like Yukon Gold etc, but I haven't seen them anywhere. I presume since potatoes grow readily here, it would be possible to get some but my enquiries to the Potato growing federation garnered not even a single response.

Anyone managed to find anything?

Oh yum, Yukon Gold. I've never seen them here so I presume they're not grown locally. As you're probably already aware, the closest you could get here would most likely be Golden Gourmet.

re Golden Gourmet... coincidentally we purchased them for the first time this week and haven't cooked them as yet. But I was surprised to read the instructions on the box that for storage to keep them in the fridge? I always keep potatoes in a dark container in the bottom of the pantry (with air holes). I thought refrigerating was bad for potatoes?

Irene I too thought potatoes shouldn't be stored in the fridge! I had a look at Oakley's website and they recommend storing small bags of spuds in the fridge as the pantry is usually too warm and will encourage sprouting. They say larger bags that don't fit in the fridge can be kept on the concrete floor in the garage out of the light.

However other websites advise not to refrigerate potatoes as the cold damp air in the fridge causes their starches to turn into sugars which can affect taste and texture. Also ethylene gas from onions or fruits like apples can make spuds sprout, so keep them away from onion storage.

Mine will stay out of the fridge - what's a few little sprouts on a potato anyway? I still use them. smiling smiley

Marylew, we had the Golden Gourmet potatoes yesterday evening for dinner. Lynette (my sister who is here on FL as well) and family were here for dinner. They were beautiful. As Lynette commented they reminded here of Mum's home grown potatoes from many years ago. I just won't tell you about the lashings of parsley butter that coated them - so good! But I rate these over Perlas

Dawn I agree a sprout or two never hurts and can so easily be pulled off as you say. I am not going to start putting my potatoes in the fridge. And if that is the case, why don't supermarkets refrigerate them smiling smiley
