Having a teen who would live on avocado if she could, I have been waiting for the new season to start.
Our local NW has new season fruit in this week. 2 large very green (hass) avocados for $10.
Not a bargain but I am happy to pay $5 each IF the fruit is mature enough too ripen.
Can I assume do you think that if it is in the supermarket system then it should ripen OK or is it still just too early?
Curious to hear if anyone has any words of caution on this one.
I know the first of the season feijoas and kiwifruit are often disasters.

A friend from Tauranga told me that she had had a seasonal job testing avocados for orchards to see if they were ripe enough to be harvested. Hopefully yours will be fine. I would like to think the buyers for large companies would not spend the high purchase cost on underripe fruit. Having said that, $5 for an avocado is a lot of money and I am going to wait till I hear from Avocados To You on the Coromandel that theirs are ready to ship.

Speaking of Kiwifruit, two weeks ago I bought a kilo bag on special at one of our local supermarkets. They were (are) as hard as nails and none of them have ripened naturally or by being put in a bag with apples and some with bananas. I remember many, many years ago my sister told me that it is the frost that ripens them, so I did an experiment. I put one in the freezer and left it there for about 4 hours. Took it out and sat it on the bench for a couple of hours then ate it. It was still a little hard but not as hard as those still in the paper bags. So I put 2 in the freezer just before going to bed. When I remembered them next day, round about lunch time as that's when I usually eat my fruit, I took them out and left them sitting on the bench. About 3 hours later they were leaving little puddles of liquid on the bench and they were very soft - overly soft but they were delicious. Now I'll progressively put one or two in the freezer and set my timer for 6 hours and hopefully I can finish them in the next few days.

At our local and excellent fruit and vege shop they are $9.99 for just one? They have the other round type that are ripe when green, can't remember the variety, for a couple of dollars less but still!! WTF. I bought a bag of frozen Mexican ones from Gilmours a little while ago, they are frozen in halves, I will get one out and try it now the price has come to this again!

Outcome of this is that we are all happy.
The avocados are ripening beautifully. I have since bought about 4 more as they are now 2 for $8.
Still no bargain but I don't mind.
They are new season Stephanie, I guess maybe from Northland.
The avocado person I interviewed on radio said that the main season starts in June so these are only a little early.

Good to know Helen - I am always hesitant incase they don't ripen or even worse - just go bad. Good idea to take them back if they dont, never thought of that.
I saw in leaving Tauranga in the weekend you could get 5 for $10, Im assuming small ones. I wish Id stopped.
On the opposite end, I hate buying mangos only to discover they are brown inside - really disappointing. I must remember to take back.
My son LOVES mango and would eat 2 a day if I let him!
Vanessa - Avocado lover too

I tried the frozen ones last night! I defrosted them (they were in halves), the texture definitely changes with freezing they were a bit sort of jellyish rather than firm. The colour stayed perfect but the flavour was a bit wierd I felt. So I mashed them up with lime juice and a dash of green Tabasco, beautiful colour and the mashed texture was good but no where near the flavour of fresh avocado. Would have been improved with finely chopped onion and tomato and made into a proper Guacamole I think. Oh well.... worth a try.

Hi Helen, I got them at Gilmours in the Frozen veges section, depending on the day they have bags of about 8 halves of frozen skinless Avocado fruit, pre-made guacamole in tubs and also another brand of pre-made in a plastic bag. Some of these products are from Mexico. The frozen avocado halves make a beautiful silky bright green puree but lack flavour and the texture is slightly different, I wouldn't like them used sliced or cubed in a dish which is what I had hoped to use them for - in a salsa, they loose their texture. So i mashed them up and they were fine, very nice colour.

Report update. One of my $3.50 avocados was ready this morning but it was pale, milky and flavourless. Disappointing. Interestingly it ripened from the neck downwards. The reverse is normal.
Every year this happens. I should know better.
I'm going to wait until late July before I try again.

Helen, last year at this time I bought a box from a Tauranga grower (to share with a friend) and they were stringy, pale and disappointing. I told the grower, whose parents had had some from the same pick and gave them the same feedback, and she replaced them and said then that they really were too early, and the richness and depth of flavour develop much more, later in the season. I have bought some more (silly me) and they are the same. Patience!

i stopped at a road side wheel barrow yesterday and they had 3 large avocados in a bag for $5.00.They were hass because I know them quite well, but they were bright green and rough skinned.I didn't buy any because I think that they should be picked this sept/oct.I think that they probably will go soft but will be tasteless.

Can I add the wheel barrow of avocados were sitting outside a rural property only built last year with no trees around it, so I don't know where they obtained them. This is a problem because they are so expensive people steal them and are advertised on facebook.I don't know where the wheel barrow of avocados came from but they were not ready to sell.

Helen, you might like to check out Avocados To You. They are on the Coromandel and I have been buying from them for several years now. I usually get an email to say when they are ready.

I have tried them every now and again and the latest one, started for breakfast this morning, is still disappointing. Pale, milky and almost flavourless. Interesting that they colour differently too. Instead of the matt black one is accustomed to with Hass avocados when they ripen, they are a shiny brown/black. Presumably still being picked too early. Sigh.

I've started to buy avocados from this Katikati grower: [www.theavotree.co.nz] We have just finished our first box, and the quality was very good so I've ordered again.
