Hi Jeanne,
I have a little Fielder's recipe from many years ago and inside its front cover is a picture of the cornflour packet featuring the recipe below:
FIELDER’S SPONGE SANDWICH
3 eggs
4 tbsp sugar
2½ heaped tbsp cornflour
1 dssp plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
Beat the egg whites to a stiff froth and add the egg yolks. Add the sugar gradually and beat until stiff and the sugar has dissolved. Add the sifted cornflour, flour and baking powder. Place the mixture into 20cm (8”) sandwich tins.
Bake in a moderately hot oven, 180°C (350°F) gas, 215°C (425°F) for 15 minutes.
Also featured in the book is a recipe for "Fielder's Famous Sponge Sandwich" which is slightly different to the one above:-
3 eggs
½ cup plain or caster sugar
few drops vanilla, almond or lemon essence
5 tbsp cornflour
2 dssp flour
2 tsp baking powder
The method is the same as above with the essence added just before the dry ingredients are fold in.
Bake at 190°C (375°F) for 15-20 minutes.

Hi Lesley,
I've just had another look in my little book and found the advertising page of recipes minus the coupon that I used to post away for the little book - on that page is a chocolate sponge recipe so I hope that it's the recipe is the one you recall. Here it is:-
FIELDER’S CHOCOLATE SPONGE
3 eggs
½ cup sugar
¾ cup flour
¼ cup cornflour
2 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp cocoa
1 tbsp butter
4 tbsp boiling water
Separate the eggs, beat the egg whites until firm. Gradually add the sugar, beat until dissolved. Add the egg yolks, beat evenly through. Sift the flour, cornflour, baking powder and cocoa 3 times, then fold gently into the egg mixture. Pour water on to the butter, and making sure the butter is melted, stir into the mixture. Pour into 2 greased 20cm (8”) sponge tins.
Bake at 215°C (425°F) for 10-12 minutes. Turn out.
When cool, ice with chocolate icing or fill with cream.

Hi Lesley,
If the recipe that Shirley has posted isn't the one you are after, perhaps it could be this one ... It's out of an old booklet called - "Better Cooking with Fielders Cornflour"
CHOCOLATE SPONGE SANDWICH
4 eggs
pinch of salt
6oz sugar
6oz self raising flour
1 dsp cornflour
1 dsp cocoa
1 Tbs golden syrup
1 dsp butter
4 Tbsp hot water
Beat egg whites with salt until stiff
Gradually add sugar and continue beating until sugar has dissolved
Add egg yolks one at a time, mix in gently
Fold in the dry ingredients sifted together
Then the golden syrup, butter and water boiled together
Pour into two greased 8in sandwich tins
Bake at 350F for 20 - 25 mins.
When cool sandwich together with whipped fresh cream or mock cream
Spread more on the top and decorate with grated chocolate
*********************************************************
I love these older recipe booklets, they are so interesting.
For instance, in this one has the following:
WEIGHTS and MEASURES:
1 and 1/4 cup of liquid = 1/2 pint
1 gill = 1/4 pint
1 egg = 2oz
Six pennies = 2oz
Three pennies = 1oz
A penny and a half penny = 1/2 oz
Threepence and a halfpenny = 1/4 oz
Now that ought to bring back memories for some of you??!!:}
Cheers
Dot
