We buzzed through Rotorura and went right to Ohope for several days. We were at the East Cape Lighthouse today, and are now in Gisbourne for a couple of days. Then it looks like a trip up to Bay of Plenty again, only further north.
We have to travel like this to keep in the sun during this Summer you are having this year.

J1'
We walked the track from Ohope to Whakatane, drank two quarts of beer, ate two burgers and a scoop of chips, (at the quarthouse), and then walked the track back to Ohope.
It was then Gin O'clock and feet up time.
We are heading back up into that area tomorrow, only along Highway 2 instead of around the cape. Plan on fishing the Waioeka gorge for a couple days, then up North. So we will be back through Whakatane, but not sure yet about the trip out to the volcanic Island. We never really know too much in advance where we will end up, just chasing the sun.
Thanks for the heads up!

We left Gisbourne, fished the Waiocka Gorge (where Leslyn outfished me in good fashion), then on to Waihi Beach for a few days. We did find a Rena wreck container on a beach up from Waihi beach. Also a few days in Whitianga, and way out to Opito Bay, and even beyond to Matapaua bay, a few KMs further. Back to Whitianga by way of the HWY 309. We are now in Coromandel Town for several days. Went all the way up the west side today, and going up the East side to the end tomorrow. Also stopped for paua at Chums beach, but only found small ones, and an octopus.

Enjoying your photos, Greg - glad you are enjoying your time with us. Those birds in your photos are pukeko or purple swamp hens. They are often seen pecking around in ditches on the side of the road and therefore sometimes end up as road kill. The are very protective and will attack if you get what they regard as too close to their young.

The birds I was referring to were in the Farm Stay set in which the caption said that they were a family of ? and maybe Irene knew what they were. However, having looked again, I realise that while they look like pukeko, maybe they aren't as the beaks on the ones in the image are longer than pukeko beaks.
Maybe Irene does indeed know what they are.

Some new photos from Coromondal Town, Driving Creek Railway, and some from Paiha and Keri Keri, where we are now. We just this evening got back from the top of 90 mile beach and the lighthouse up there.

It sure has been cold down in the South Island, we're sure glad we did that first, and are now up North.

Greg and Leslyn - a bit of history which you may (or may not) be interested in. The existing town of Russell was not the site of the first capital of NZ. While it was called Russell, the site of the first capital was at Okiato (where the vehicle ferry from Opua crosses to), about 8kms by road away. At that time, what is now the existing town of Russell was called Kororareka. It was the capital for a brief period in the early 1840s with Governor Hobson at the helm before being moved to Auckland and then to Wellington where it has remained. All that remains of the first capital at Okiato is a wishing well.

Here are a few shots of around Whatuwhiwhi.

The weather was nice, but since we have been around Goat Island (Leigh), and now at Algies Bay, there seems to be a chill in the air. It is still a lot warmer than Montana right now.

We were in Orewa yesterday and got our limits of cockles for lunch today. Taking off Thursday to "drop" in on Irene down Rotorura way.
Only have a week left, then off to Montana to start tomatoes and peppers going in the greenhouse, about two weeks later than usual, but been having too much fun down here so they will have to wait.

Some photos of Algies bay and getting cockles around Orewa, Shakespeare Park, Just North of Auckland. Les has a few more to post, and will get to them in the next few days. We are back in Montana, and now after jet lag, I am in the greenhouse making up for lost time.
