Dare I mention the quality drama
The Real Housewives of Auckland that recently showcased on TV last week.
regardless of how ridiculous viewing it is.......I'm interested to know why people chose to do reality TV....obviously these ladies don't need the money, so do they really do it for fame? and if so, is it worth the risk ? You have no real control of how you are going to be presented to the public - I guess you have control over what you say - but someone on their best behaviour will be deemed boring so is it better to be boring OR a Bitch?

Im really surprised about Louise Wallace - I thought she was a respected journalist ? What happened?
Is it a bit like Jerry Springer or Jeremy Kyle, the TRASH on their shows is UNBELIEVABLE ! I think they had respected careers before venturing into daytime trash.
Funny how its on during the day though, target market -unemployed...

Lorna, I am having a real chuckle here. I think both the UK and Australia have also gone down the trashy reality highway... It's an unfortunate world wide phenomena that is obviously cheaper for the networks to produce as opposed to good quality drama. I absolutely refuse to watch any reality tv. Although I have to confess to getting sucked in to NZ's Dancing With The Stars

Irene, I was meaning the shows we used to get from Australia & UK, like Packed to the Rafters, etc. Those two countries produced some wonderful series and mini-series, I wouldn't mind watching them all over again.
And British comedies are (or were) really funny and credible, ie, real-life situations that are believable, not stuff passed off as comedy like Mork & Mindy.

We are actually in the Golden Age of TV, there is some fab stuff out there but it is not always obvious or on during the prime periods on free to air.
- Lightbox is free for Spark customers - some great stuff
- Netflix is about $13 a month and I cannot keep up with the great shows, many only on Netflix not free to air.
- Choice TV - free to air, some wonderful quirky documentaries
- Soho - costly, we have just removed Sky but I will miss some of their shows
- Even 1,2,3 and Prime, but certainly not in the most part from 7pm - 9.30pm
I haven't seen the RHWOA, and I don't watch a lot of reality TV.....but I have in the past become interested in The Block (two years ago), X Factor (also two years ago) and I do love Britain's Best Home Baker......I try not to get sucked in because then you become addicted. And I am not immune

I have to say I'm a bit addicted to those US home renovation/flip shows. I just love seeing what they start with (usually really awful or shabby) and how gorgeous they look at the end. Also a bit addicted to the House Hunter and Tiny Houses shows too.
Re Aussie shows, season 2 of 800 Words has just started and seems as good as the first. If you don't know it, it's about a recently widowed Aussie (actor Erik Thomson) who moves to NZ with his 2 kids (I thinks it's filmed north of Auckland). It's a little bit quirky, a little bit humourous and a nice mix of good Aussie and Kiwi actors. Also season 2 of The Code - an Aussie cyber crime type show has just started and that also seems as good this time round.
