Im a digital art teacher and next door to me is a traditional art teacher.
She has been helping me create a large canvas of abstract art. Ive been watch her work and followed some of her techniques.
Ive enjoyed the process so I guess thats what matters BUT Im struggling to understand the communication of an idea in my work and that of others. I really want to understand abstract art more and be less cynical about it.
Its with out a doubt harder than it looks but sometimes it looks like someones just thrown paint at a canvas.
Any tips or thoughts?
Vanessa

Abstract art has endless possibilities for your mind to interpret and see. Art that's a landscape or vase of flowers or some other existing object has already been largely defined so your mind can be lazy or think itself clever by going "what a lovely landscape". It partly depends on whether you like thinking or having your thinking done for you. The best abstract art can take your mind to special places, e.g. a void of no thought, the essence of the universe, your own centre of being. Your mind can, as time passes, reinterpret abstract art in new ways which is not so possible with landscapes, still lifes, etc.
If you are "struggling to understand the communication of an idea in my work and that of others" - don't even do an abstract art piece with an idea or communication in mind. Just do the art with no thought - let the art speak for itself and reveal something to you instead.

Have you studied any art history Vanessa? Here's a good educational piece from the Tate, with useful examples. It might help.
