I slipped on the wet concrete at home last week which resulted in concussion and stitches. Over the weekend a wound flared up and I am back in hospital on Iv antibiotics.
How quickly things can change and I hadn't even left the house!
I think the residual concussion symptoms of woolly head and a bit of vertigo will be the hardest to shake.
Meanwhile we need our concrete water blasted!

Thanks for your kind wishes.
I guess this has been a shock reminder that accidents can easily happen in the home and you need to take preventative steps to safe guard against them. Our concrete patio area hasn't been water blasted for a while and once the rain hit it became a skating rink.
I am hoping that with some daily naps and taking it easy my brain will get back into gear quickly.

Ouch - nasty. I hope the infection clears quickly and you can get back to the comfort of your home. Give your head plenty of time.. my son had a mild concussion a couple of years ago and even then it took him several weeks to be back to normal. He'd get tired very easily and couldn't cope at all with stressful situations.
I know what you mean about little things though. 15 years ago I slipped on water leaking from a washing machine. I broke 2 bones in my hand, and the follow on from the effects of that fall meant 6 operations in the following 8 years on my right wrist and forearm, month and months and months of physio, about 9 months in a splint and a total of nearly a year in a cast to my shoulder. All because I put off replacing a hose because I was busy.

Ouch Jenna that would have been awful.
I have advertised for a wwoof this morning as I have loads of jobs that need doing, a spare bedroom and a fridge that is always full of food so another mouth makes no difference.
I will get her onto water blasting, clearing leaves and all the other jobs that I keep meaning to get to and realise now are potential hazards.
This time of year is busy for us with the girls rowing most weekends so it will be easier to get someone independent onto helping us.

Hi Helen. I am catching up on FL and didn't expect to see this news. How horrible for you and the family. And then to be hit with an infection - you poor thing!! With regards the vertigo (I am quite an experienced face planter).... I was referred to a specialist for vertigo, and one of his solutions was to have me lie across a bed face up, and then suspend from your shoulders upwards, over the side of the bed and stay like that for a few minutes. Apparently our ears have floaty things in them like little balls and a fall can force them to the bottom of your ears, which causes vertigo. By hanging your head off the bed it repositions them. My terminology and location of these floaty balls may be off, but when I have vertigo return that is what I do.
Sending you lots of fuzzy warms, sunshine and hugs!!

Gosh Helen, that is awful! I'm also dealing with my partner who has an infection in his leg which starting from a small nick in his knee and blew his leg up to twice the size. Normal antibiotics haven't cleared the infection so he is now going to A&E every night for IV antibiotics. So Yes, I agree how quickly things can happen. Within a few days, he's lost his ability to drive, walk or sleep! Thankfully the IV antibiotics seem to be making some in roads now!

Only just caught up with this - so sorry to hear about this, Helen, and I hope you're on the mend. Eight years at ACC taught me how easily accidents happen and as a result I'm extremely safety conscious, but despite all best efforts things can still happen. Do take it easy on yourself - I've seen a lot of cases of concussion and they often had more of an effect than the person was expecting. We often read about sportspeople getting it and shrugging it off and I think that gives us an impression that it's trivial, but it often has quite an effect and doing too much does it no good.

Thanks everyone, this has certainly knocked me more than I would have liked.
Carolyn your comments re sports people has made me feel a whole lot better as the concussion specialist (sports Dr) I went to told me that pretty much everyone he deals with have shaken it off within 3 weeks and it is 3 weeks today.
But I am not an athlete and am probably twice the age of many of his patients.
