My son has made, or attempted to make, a lot of this stuff in the last 6 months. For him (and me) it has been more miss than hit. There are a lot of recipes out there that are all very similar, but what I found is that none of them are exact, and much like bread making, there is a lot of feel to it. Some people seem to have the knack, but we've not quite got it down, probably because I cannot stand touching the stuff so only assist from a distance. The main problem we've had is the slime taking on the texture cooked egg white, and breaking up instead of stretching. This can sometimes be resolved by dipping the slime in a strong mixture of borax and more squeezing (strong being 3t borax to 1C water). You can avoid the recipes with contact lens solution, that is just another way of getting borax into the mix.
My experience with the fluffy slime recipes that include shaving foam, is that they are more successful, but the slime deteriorates very quickly, within a day or so, and you end up with a separated mess that can seep out of sealed containers that are left on their side.
Borax can be bought relatively cheaply from Bunnings if you have one close. I bought a 1kg tub for about $6, and that lasts a long time in slime making. I see it is now $10 though. I've found PVA to be cheapest from The Warehouse, at around $4 for a 500ml bottle. Most recipes call for about 125ml (near enough to 125g) of glue. You can add food colouring if you wish, but it does stain hands while mixing.
Best of luck!

My experience has been more miss than hit too. Avoiding using borax and the recipes that don't use borax don't seem to work - except for one where you have to keep squeezing the slime to keep it together and then it just goes runny. Maybe using borax is the only way to have success.

I wonder if this NZ Government early childhood play ideas website might help you? It has recipes for gloop, finger paint and slime. Their slime recipe uses soap flakes (don't know whether we can still buy Lux Flakes or not(?)). You need to scroll down a distance to find the recipes! [www.education.govt.nz]
Hope this helps.

I've always found the bought stuff that has all the ingredients but you make it, much better than creating it from scratch. The homemade stuff is always too sticky and I find it everywhere around the house - its hard to get off fingers. I am interested to see if anyone has found the perfect recipe though

Ingrid - good point about the kits. I forgot I'd bought an Elmer's kit from Warehouse Stationery last year (I've seen them at Countdown as well), and it worked very well. Perhaps for a one off activity for a visit or something, a kit may be much easier as you're just about guaranteed a working end product. I do recall that it did look like it wasn't working, but after a few minutes of squidging around in a bowl, it all came together and even lasted well in a container for a few days.
