who we are? October 19, 2004 12:06PM |
I know this is something we have done on the foodie chat forum. (if you look back through search under who are we posted on 07-06-04 you will see the last "who are we" posting.)
It would be very nice to find out who everyone is your hobbies, interests where do we live etc...
I live in sunny Timaru South Canterbury New Zealand. My husband and i own a dessert manufacturing company called Denheath Desserts. Donald (my husband) and I have two small children, Majick (5) and Keesarla (3), and grown up children from a previous marrige: Carl, Destiny and Bronze and grandson Gali.
We fell into the food business by accident when my mother became terminally ill. Donald was a working musician and i had just had Majick when we took over.
I love cooking, baking eating, needlework, music, surfing the net, reading, writing and thailand.
I love the fun friendly chat, the recipes and the immense help and advice i get off foodlovers and am most definately a foodlovers addict !!! Much to my better halfs annoyance @ times

Good idea Lisa for an update with new members online everyday, it is always nice to "know" who you are talking to:}
I live in Christchurch and apart from 1 year living in Auckland I have lived here for all my 43 years! My husband Ross and I have our own business, we have a small family run finance company. Due to a back problem I do not work in the office now but still do a little from home. Ross's son works for us and our plan is for him to take the business over completely in 2006 and we will go do something else. I have 2 stepsons and 1 gorgeous grandson, we are hinting for more grandchildren!
I love the garden and enjoyed renovating our house but after 2 lots of spinal surgery and a 3rd waiting I have had to reluctantly give these up. Fortunately I have always loved to cook and I now have a lot more time to cook for us and family and friends. I first started cooking at an early age, my Mum died when I was 10 and even before she had died I was cooking for Dad and my 2 older brothers. I am sure we had some interesting meals to say the least in the early days. I love puddling around in the kitchen and love to make "red cross" parcels for family and friends. I enjoy preserving too.
We are in the process of having a new house built so that will keep me occupied for the next year. I have had a great time designing my new dream kitchen and can't wait to see it built.
We enjoy travel and spend a reasonable amount of time each year travelling. We have learnt to speak Italian and are now learning French although I am finding it a little difficult to switch between Italian and French! Ross and I are both keen readers and always have a pile of "books in progress" next to our chairs and bed.
I love the chat, advice etc on this site and check in several times during the day to see what is happening. I am pleased to say I am an addict too.
Take care
Bev

Hi, I'm from Timaru as well. Hubby and I celebrated our 40th wedding ann. in the weekend so Lisa if you saw the pink limo driving around on Sat night with people doing the 'royal wave' to all and sundry, you now know who it was. Our daughter put on a surprise party for us and we had a most enjoyable night.
We have three married children and two beautiful grandchildren (14mths and 3yrs) who are the apple of Nana and Pop's eye, just love them to bits.
I am also a gardening freak. I have about 200 roses. Can't wait till they are all in bloom and the garden is magically transformed. Unfortunately I have had problems with my knee and I have been unable to garden much although I did get to do the pruning. Hubby is trying to keep on top of the weeds as well as being chief cook and bottle washer and working full time.
Next week I will be having a knee replacement so hopefully by Christmas I will be up and at it.
This site has been a life saviour to me over the past seven months(if not addictive!!) and I thank you all for your input, for recipes that I have saved, advice that is given and the laughs over baking/kitchen mishaps. Keep 'em coming girls.....and boys.
Cheers,
Nellie

Hello everyone. I'm from beautiful Buckinghamshire in the UK; positioned midway between Oxford and London, yet in the heart of the country.
I've been very happily married to a smashing man for 37 years and have a son and a daughter, both of whom have now flown the nest. My daughter is single and lives 10 minutes away, but my son lives in Wales so we find ourselves long-distance grand parents to our adorable little 2 year old Meghan. Consequently, we are up and down that motorway so often, you wouldn't believe it!! (Off up there again tomorrow, picking her up from nursery and having her to ourselves, till her parents finish work!)
My husband works for a very well known airline, so we are lucky enough to enjoy lots of holidays in lovely places. I love baking cakes and puddings and making preserves, although I usually end up giving most of them away, as we don't eat them that often; and I enjoy crafts. At the moment I am making hand crafted birthday cards.
Wouldn't it be great if we could also post a pic of ourselves? I know I have an idea in my head of how I imagine you all to look and I can hear that lovely New Zealand accent when I read your posts!!!
Well, I could go on all day, but at the risk of boring you all to death, so I'll stop now. I hope we can keep this forum buzzing!

Hi, I'm Rachel from Ashburton. My Husband and two children (Kathryn 8 & AImee 6) have lived here for nearly 11 months! We previously lived in Carterton, Wairarapa. We owned a dairy farm there but had to sell when I developed Arthritis in my neck & spine. Unfortunately our friends (ie: old family friends) didn't understand that we were selling for health reasons (4th generation owners yadda yadda) and rumers flew. Nasty.
Anyhow, we looked all around the North Island for a drystock farm with no luck, and then fate kicked in! Someone from Ashburton had heard about Stuart (hubby) and asked us to move here to work for him (on a 3000 acre cropping farm). And all of a sudden here we are! And we love it here.
I love cooking (obvious!), reading, scrapbooking, interior design and helping with my daughter's school. I don't work due to my arthritis & another illness. I don't bake as much as I would like to as our current home is TINY!!!! We hope to find a larger home soon.
Next please!

Hello there, Van here....
I live in Titirangi, Auckland but have not long come back from living in the UK for 5 years. I have 2 kids, Cam who is 13 and Ellen who is 12 and lucky for me partner works from home so the kids always have someone around. I work in the IT industry as a Project manager, which means I get paid to be bossy... fantastic!
I am a Aucklander but was born in Tokoroa, spent most of my 43 years in Auckland with the exception of 10 years in the UK off and on and 3 years in Wellington.
Food is my passion, both cooking and eating. I love to entertain and have my friends around to share and enjoy my cooking. I also enjoy swimming, reading, movies, my kids and food and wine of course.
I enjoy taking part in the forum when I find the time ( and I make sure I do), and can honestly say I have learnt some new things .
That’s it from me…

Hi, Lynette from PNG. I'm originally from Hamilton but have lived in PNG with my husband for nearly 12 years now (came for only 2!) and we are still enjoying it. I'm 41, a chartered accountant with an international accountancy firm, and have a little boy, Trent, who is nearly 4. My passions are food, wine and travel and as a result I've developed a keen interest in keeping fit! We visit NZ about twice a year providing we can tag a sidetrip to NZ on to our holidays. My "big" sister is Irene (5 feet and half an inch tall!) who regularly contributes to the forum.
I'd love to see a profile page set up for foodlovers members where we can post a photo. I got a shock in the last "who are we?" thread as I had totally wrong ages, etc for a lot of foodlovers and would love see photos. Either that or I plan my next trip to NZ for when there's a foodlovers catch up.

I'm jen, I live in Taupo with husband of 22 years(+the try before you buy years), and the Furkids, Tera,+Chaos, the BelgianShepherds+ Ricky the collie, who is recovering form a snapped cruciet ligament operation and now has a 24 carat gold leg...I think Vets should give Fly-Buys!!! 2 cats, Merv and Scarfie...on account of being weak-willed whilst on holiday in Dunedin, taking in all the tourist spots, and shops which happened to include a pet shop! Hence the name Scarfie!
I am a foodie, but my hobby is reading labels very closely, and this includes what my pets eat. Welsh born of Welsh parents, but spent most of my life in NZ, Auckland was home up unti 17 years ago when we were made redundant 12 months apart, we threw caution to the wind and gambled on a new life in Taupo; ended up buying the business where I first worked in Taupo, and just adore the easy going lifestyle. We both like to travel when time allows, this usually means a few days mid-week, but hoping to do some serious long distance travel in the not too distant future.
Well, that's me in a ...shell! I am keen to share others food hints/scandals; We need a NZ "Food Hero" whose not afraid of treading on some toes along the way, in order to ferret out some of the under-arm bowling techniques that go on within the food industry, and power to the Slow Food movement!

Re: who we are? October 20, 2004 05:50AM |
and I am Irene. And if I can correct my little sis.. I am 5' 1 and a half, not 5' and half an inch thanks. Good god every inch counts. Lynette put me onto this forum, and at first I read the forum, but now put my two bits in, and am frantically printing off and trying recipes, absolutely love this website.
I am 48 yrs old, working as a Travel Agent in Hamilton. Have 2 sons who are not living with me, they are 21 (recently engaged) and 20 and both tower over me at over 6 foot. My partner, George, is Romanian, and also well over 6 foot. Where are all the short people in this world - it's not fair!! My hobbies are travel, food, wine, reading, quilting (but my current project has not been touched for a wee while yikes). And I go to the gym every week morning, that's out of necessity, not passion!! Love my family and friends - and must also say thanks to Lynette for another reason for referring me to this site... Denheaths!! Am going to Westfield tomorrow night for purely shopping reasons, but guess what lurks at the cafe there, beckoning me, calling... come eat me, come eat me (oh I am a licorice addict as well!!)
A profile page would be brilliant, as with all the Lyn's etc etc and advancing senility, at times I forget who's who !!

I'm Helen, nearly 50, live in Hamilton with Darrell, and have 4 children between us, his 2 sons, one in Norway and one in Australia and my daughter in Auckland & son who has come back home. We have an architectural practice in Hamilton which covers the from Northland to Taupo. Hence ships that pass in the night sometimes.
I found this site a few years ago, and am addicted, I must confess, but also enjoy food, entertaining, gym, reading, cross stitch, embroidery and travel.
The kids all benefit from the cooking as I enjoy baking, more so when Elysia is home as she loves taking home cooking back to Auckland to share with her co-workers. At least I get to have a wee taste and dont have to feel guilty about food being wasted that I have enjoyed making.!!!!
Thanks also to this site, for Denheaths and Tammy's wee treats. Both life savers for birthday gifts and xmas parcels.
I have met a few good friends through this site and now get to enjoy other foodies company as a result.

Re: who we are? October 20, 2004 07:15AM |
Well - I guess it's my turn to spill the beans........
I'm one of the Raewyns - I always thought it was an uncommon name - but perhaps we are destined to be foodies.
I am 47, married to John for 23 wonderful years and have 2 sons, Alex - just celebrated his 21st and in his last year at Massey doing Applied Economics and Cameron, in his last year at College. We have lived in Palmerston North for nearly 5yrs and previous to that Whangarei, Pukekohe, Blenheim, Masterton and originally from Wellington.
I work as a nurse at our local hospice, making a total of 7yrs working in this very challenging - and rewarding specialist area of nursing. I have recently suffered a shoulder injury and been off work for nearly 4 months - and this site has kept me going. I will have to get my willpower back when I return to "normality".
I love my garden, cross stitich, scrapbooking, family life and friends and adore travelling, having done several o/seas trips with my lovely family. Recently visited Alex in Santa Cruz, California where he spent a year on a Massey exchange at their Uni.
I love food - thank goodness I have a Labrador to walk daily to attempt to compensate - and really enjoy this site for it's inspiration and new things to try. I love the banter between us all - can't start my day until I check what's going on.
Confession time now - when I work an AM shift I get up at 5.45 - AND - yes I log on before I go to work - but don't tell anyone will you - esp the Udder Raewyn
Next one please

Re: who we are? October 20, 2004 09:15AM |
I'm Margaret, early 60's with 2 adult sons. I was born and brought up in Auckland, but moved to Hastings almost 35 years ago when I married Doug. Doug was born on the West Coast, and always wanted to move "South" again - I must admit that it took me over 30 years to agree to do so!
So - we "retired" to Ashburton in 2000, and just love it here. I say "retired" as we seem to be busier now than we ever have been. Hubby is a bowler, while I am interested in handcrafts, knitting, etc, and am very involved with Women's Institute.
I am also one of the "arthritic brigade" being diagnosed when I was 20. At the moment I am waiting for 2 knee replacements, and hope that it won't be too long until I am mobile again. Nellie - I hope your operation goes well and you are back running around soon.
I can't remember how I found this site, but find it is the first one I log on to every day, and mostly more than once!

These days I try not to melt my plastic accessories on my walking frame on the stove!!! hehehehe
Hobbies and Interests: cooking, Rugby (involved in the administration of a city club for the past 3 years), gardening, calligraphy, cartoons, painting, sewing, computer, collecting old recipe books, spending quality time with mine and Les' family, our animals and birds and chookies.
Addictions: Foodlovers (I check it out about 5.15am each weekday morning but shhhhhh don't tell that Raewyn above!)
Pet Hates: The toilet seat being left open, I like the lid down, Mr Nobody who frequents the fridge, dodgy or inferior products from retailers (especially food items, I am the Queen of Complaints), and fools!
That's more than enuf from me! Cheers for the opportunity to introduce myself. "The Udder Raewyn":/

Hi, I am 43, and live in Tauranga -(formerly of Dannevirke and Wellington).
I have a 12 year old son who now lives with his dad in Wellington as he missed him so much (sob, sob)....I am a sponsorship co-ordinator for a Christian missions organisation and I LOVE my job - I help to match up gorgeous children from all over the world with many generous kiwis!
I love living up here it's very laid-back, and I enjoy cooking to relax..........
I regularly have international students staying, so it's great to have someone to cook for and to learn more about the cuisine of many countries.
I enjoy my small vegetable garden, and having friends around.

I also have a Grandson named Hunter who will be 1 on the 31st....he is just delightful, try getting round the supermarket with him, takes me forever as everyone comments on his lovely red hair!!!....which like his father I am sure he will hate when he's older....well thats enough about me lets hear from some more Foodlovers

I'm Kaye, I have lived all my life in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, near Whakatane. I am 44....married for 26 yrs, self employed dairy farmer in partnership with my husband, we have 3 children, the two eldest are away from home most of the year studying, daughter #1, 23yrs, has a BA and is just finishing a Dip Education, and hopefully will be teaching in a rural primary school next year. Daughter #2, 19yrs is studying for a Bachelor of Design at UNITEC, and hopes to be a jewellery designer. Our son is 15 and at home, going to high school. All good kids... just as well, because they have been my main job, until now!!
Now that I am not so busy???? I am studying the Humanities through the Open Polytechnic, and enjoying it. I enjoy music, reading, handcrafts, sewing, cardmaking, cross stitich, try to garden with mixed results... and like tramping. I play the piano, but not as much as I used to, or ought to, considering the years spent practicing. I enjoy cooking.. or rather I enjoy eating... way too much for my own good. Because of this, I try exercising, walking, biking, rowing, but I have trouble with my motivation and tend to do it in fits and starts....
Oh and when I have to, I can milk cows, these days though I only get called on when things go really wrong, or my companionship is required. I look after the paperwork for the farms, a never ending paperchase. I love to travel, but for now that is on hold, while we help our kids through their education.
My ultimate dream is to retire to a nice house, with a good kitchen, and somewhere to keep heaps of books!!, overloooking the Ohiwa Harbour, where our dry cows and young stock now graze. For now though we live on the home farm, where the milking cows are.
That's it from me, who's next?

I'm Tammy. I am 30 and am a dedicated foodie!!!!! thanks Helen C-B for yoru kind comments about my wee treats. As you may know, i have a hobby business, "wee treats by Tammy" (proudly on the farmers market now) under which i make "wee treats" (traditonal style biscuits, jams, relishes, truffles and gift boxes including all these things!) In fact this week i am doing wee treats and individual cup cakes for a wedding whcih has been fun! But my real job is as a lawyer, specialising in trusts, asset protection and the Property (relationships) Act. i love my job and am lucky enough to work less than a km from my home on the north shore of Auckland, after 5 years of traipsing across the bridge!! I have a wonderful husband, Kerry, but no children. I am also a runner and get up at a rather un-godly hour to do it! Like Lisa, i also do needle work but that has taken a back seat as my love of cooking has grown and grown!!!

Hello, I'm Alison or Ali - depending on how I feel at the time. I am in my 50's, married to Malcolm for 38 years, have two children. Anton (34) is married to Trudi (no children), they currently live in Taiwan. Tara (33) is married to Tony, they have Holly (10) and live in Wellington. We live in Rotorua, Mal is the plant engineer for Kilwell (fishing rods, yacht spars and oars, paddles etc) I am a client administrator for a Chartered Accountant, I manage the tax system, process payrolls, form and maintain companies etc etc. Just started having Fridays off.
My first love is quilting (and fabric collecting) followed closely by baking, cooking and entertaining. I also enjoy Hardanger embroidery, smocking, needlework, play the piano very badly, and garden with enthusiastic ignorance. We have a 6 metre motorhome and get away in that not nearly enough!
I have been visiting the site most days since late 2002. It was ages before I felt confident enough to add something to any threads, but soon found everyone was pleased with any bits of advice or recipes offered. I correspond regularly with Kaye and Donna, have met Kaye a couple of times. Used to chat to Paula too - where are you girl? Looking forward to the BOP get together in a couple of weeks.

Hi everyone - I'm Noeleen, (50ish) live in Tauranga. Have only joined thois site this year and absolutely love it. Am married with 2 married daughters and after arriving home from Bali a few weeks ago telling one daughter and son-in-law that we will shout them a trip next year when they told us we will have to take another passenger with us. Yeh!!! Nana-in-waiting for the 1st time. Bang went their free trip!!!.
Last year spent a year in England working and travelling and enjoying the pub meals. We are planning on doing a house swap next year with someone from Cornwall.
We are semi-retired but have a business in Hamilton. I have done catering on a large scale for 'people in need", and also stepped in for cook in a Resthome but try now to avoid that now. I do casual resthome work. Take in Japanese students, Love craft work (took a craft group once) and am now making an alphabet quilt for the new grandchild. Plus doing a Noahs Ark Embroidery picture. (do you think I will be a dotty Nana)
Love cooking but frustrated a bit now as recently diagonised as Diabetic which is a pain in the butt.
Well thats it I think from me.
Noeleen

Hi everyone,
I'm Wilma (hate the name, prefer Wilm........I do sooooo enjoy it when people feel the need to say "where's Fred?" and think it's original:/)
Anyway, I'm 34 years old and also live in Howick, Auckland (hi Maree M who posted an intro above me!). I'm been married to Rob for 5 years (he says it feels like 50 - lol!) and we have 2 children - Aidan who is 28 months and Marieke who is nearly 5 months old (holy cow did that 5 months go fast!). I'm looking forward to the time when Aidan will eat a wide variety of foods (don't get me started on toddlers and their wonderful eating habits........) - it will make cooking for him more of a pleasure......
I'm currently a SAHM - at some stage I'd love to get a part-time job or study something - if the funds permit!
We shifted to Auckland just under 2 years ago from Nelson - I was a born and bred Nelsonian, so it has been quite a change to live here. In saying that I don't really need to go out of the Howick area much during the week, so it's like it's own little community anyway.
I love cooking (well, baking is more fun that cooking meals at the moment!), eating (one has to appreciate the goods!), cross-stitch (haven't done any since the kids arrived, but the thought is often there). Have just started getting into scrapbooking - I hope to do more of it when the kids are a little older......Love reading too - my DH thinks I'm weird - sometimes if we go for longish drives, I take a cookbook with me and read it in the car (please do tell me I'm not the only goofball that does this.....!)
Well, I can't think of anything else to write.
Cheers, Wilm

I'm Linda and married to Kevin and we have two children, Monique 9 and Nicholas (Nick) 7. We live in Greenhithe on the North Shore of Auckland. Have been in Greenhithe for 3yrs but previously a Westie. We had a house built for us, in what was a new subdivision in this area. With all the development happening, its now an old subdivision.
Up until Nick started school, I was a SAHM, but now working very part time - one day a week doing the accounts for a property developer. Previous to having the kids, worked for a bank for 9yrs.
Am involved with school activities and love being able to go on school trips etc.
Its only been in recent years, that I've started to experiment/discover a wider variety of foods, flavours etc.
Monique had an operation earlier this year, and while in hospital I was reading the hearld and there was an article which mentioned this site. I wrote down the website and have been hooked, ever since. And I'm somebody who doesn't usually read the papers, as they're often so full of doom and gloom. So I'm really glad, I did that day.
Have tried lots of new recipes and often the kids think I've gone absolutely mad, when they see me pouring a can of coke over chicken, or into a chocolate cake. However, nobody complains about the end result.
Linda.
