I love my roses, ( bush roses and the beautiful red Dublin Bay and white Iceberg climbers) camillias and magnolias with their beautiful deep red flowers on the bare branches. They seem to mean that winter is over (nearly) and spring has arrived.
A new tree to me, that I am growing is the Forest Pansy. It has small pink blossoms for a short while in early spring, then beautiful deep, vivid sort of burgundy red heart shaped leaves. It is stunning. Later in the season the leaves are not so vividly coloured but still remain a reddish/maroon/purple colour. All our visitors who have seen it want one.

I can't say I have any plants at home or in the house I really love because I'm not hoe much so the garden is not wonderful and the potplants bl**dy keep dying on me. I might try and find some realistic plastic ones. But I cherish roses and peonies. They remind me of my mum. Mum was a very keen gardener, and had every rose you could imagine!

My new garden hasn't got much in it yet, but while the house was being built I took cuttings of hebes and coprosmas and they are now growing quite well. I also grew 2 silk trees from seed, and these are now about 30cm tall and have just come into leaf again after their first winter. But the one that has really surprised and pleased me is the pomegranate. I saw one (fruit) in the fruit shop last year and as I hadn't had one since I was a child, I bought it. It was delicious. But I dropped a seed on the floor, which I didn't notice until later in the day. Picked it up, popped it into a spare section of a seed tray along with the hebe seedlings, and lo! It germinated. It lost all it's leaves over winter and I was loath to throw it out in case it came back to life. The arrival (?) of spring has brought new leaves and a couple of new branches, all this on a plant only about 5cm tall. Has anyone else seen pomegranate trees, or shrubs, growing in NZ?

Jennifer, I had read about the Eucryphias in an English gardening book, planted one in our previous garden, it was just getting to a good height, when we shifted. One treasure that I should have mentioned above is my Enkianthus which was small enough to shift, so it lived in a pot for several months, until the site here ready. Am also fond of Kalmias. Hope you are able to buy the Eucryphia as they are beautiful when flowering, but they do look good all year round.
