Hi jen,
I have been folowing the microchipping for litterally 21 years. My boxer recently deceased had to be chipped before she was allowed to come into nz. The Scary thing is the newest chip is small enough for an ant to pick up in its pincers and rumous conspiricy whatever you want to call it say every child in america is being chipped inside their first vitamin k injection or innoculation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
About five years ago they did a big campaign in America about instead of wearing medical bracelets you shoud be chipped instead, this way you couldn't loose them. then they told everyone it was a great thing for people with memory loss as you have the ability to track someone who is chipped. You also have the ability to monitor their body temperature and heart rate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and they did a big scare mongering with children. Its much safer to have your child micro chipped as if they get kidnapped you can find them. if you get some time one day have a look at David ickes site im sure you will find something of interest.
Kinest Regards

My main interest in this subject is because I am so against it being mandatory for dogs in NZ from 2006. I just can't get my head around it that is safe. I have also been told that because of the silicon(used in the transponder), the homeopathic remedy Silica is rendered useless, ( silica is the No1 remedy for removing foreign bodies, ie splinters etc.?)
I have probably opened a whole can of worms here, about the micropchip (dogs) debate. I feel really uncomfortable about the idea of my dogs carrying these things. The notion of human microchipping is just so obscene and scary!

I know what you mean Jen. As for the dog thing, I think it is wrong but my boxer had hers put in when she was 3 and she pasted away quite naturally at 11 years 7 months. My mum used to breed Pekingese and had a few imports with implants. They have all been happy normal healthy dogs. The thing that annoys me Jen is we live in Timaru and apparently the reader for the barcodes are only in Wellington Christchurch and Auckland, so they cannot even scan them outside of these main centres......... So what is the point! They say it is for identification, if your dog is stolen or goes missing apparently they can scan all the found dogs and walla have all your information. BAH!!!!!!

Maybe take them down to your local supermarket and have them scanned there, along with the groceries...the mind boggles!
I thought the database was held in Australia? Would be quite an undertaking to hold the info for each registered(You know, the responsible owners dogs!) dog in NZ. So, if it's too difficult, maybe the idea will be forgotten...wish!
