I can recommend them.
In the beginining I would cringe at the thought of putting something on my eyeball and the thought of having someone like the optician putting them in quite frankly would have me climbing up the wall. However! I went for it anyway (I'm a vain little thing I didn't want glasses) and don't regret it.
If you have had a steady prescription for your eyes for the past few years then perhaps consider laser surgery. It is costly but I am sure it is worth it if you put it up against the cost of purchasing contacts regularly and the fluffing around with taking them out and cleaning them each night. I hope to do it once I've got the finances.

We both wear contacts and I wouldn't be without mine. Hubby wears his as he has keratconus(sp) I have had mine for about 15 years now and it is just a matter of "putting my eyes in" in the morning and away I go. It didn't take long for me to get used to putting them in, it is just desentising the eyes which happens pretty quickly. As long as you use good hygiene practice with hands being very clean and you clean the lens as per recommendation you should have no problems. I honestly would never go back to glasses. Our optomertrist charges about $150 and you get your lens and a few visits to make sure they are the right size and that all is well with them. I would highly recommend trying them cos until you try you aren't going to know.

I have been wearing contact lens for 38 years. When I started wearing them they were hard lens and only 48% or wearers could manage them. Since then have moved to gas permable. However as a new wearer you may be able to wear a whole range of new lens. As you age and your vision changes, one lens can be brought back half a power to enable long distance with one eye and reading with the other. The lens used to be marked with an R. for right but the latest is that each lens is coloured differently to differentiate between left and right. Just a slight tint . Have glasses for making the bed but that is all. Contacts are brilliant.

Hi Carol
I , too, have been wearing contacts for about 38 years. I do still have a pair of glasses as sometimes my eyes just feel tired and need a rest. My contacts go in at 5.30 in the morning and come out at 11.00 at night. I now use monthly disposables and my son wears daily disposables. You will hardly even know you have have them in. I am a regular surfie and a water skiier and they have never washed out, inspite of some spectacular crashes. There are many new types available, the dailies are more expensive but are coming down in price. I have a regular prescription and I buy my lens over the internet- they are usually much cheaper. I buy a years supply to cut down on the postage costs.
I wouldn't be without them.

I have to agree with the thought that you have to try them and find out for yourself. I got my first glasses about 30 years ago and wore contacts for a few years, soft ones, that had to be taken out and cleaned and sterilised each evening. They were ok for a while, but I developed an allergy to the cleaning solution. Found a way around this and used them until I had my children then found that the hormonal changes while pregnant affected my eyes and I found them uncomfortable so it was back to glasses.... somehow with small kids and so on glasses just seemed the easy option and I have never worn contacts fulltime since. Although I did get some of the newer ones that you can wear for about a month a few years ago and found them handy if I had to work in steamy or wet places. ( stripping wallpaper off walls, and doing farm chores in the rain etc etc) It all comes down to personal preference - for me glasses are ok. I find a good pair more comfortable than contacts.
Try and you'll know.

Sorry Lorna - I find that my contacts are more comfortable to wear after I have been up and around and had a shower. It seems the eye is quite dry after a night's sleep. So because I am short sighted I need to be able to see for the first hour of the day and that is when I use my glasses. Contact lens are a lot more comfortable in a hot climate. A few years ago I built up an intolerance to the lens I was wearing and developed alergic conjunctivitis and after much inquiring found if I changed to a lens with a different composition, it would trick the brain and I could wear contacts again. I store mine dry and clean them every night with a solution, but once a week I clean them with a diswashing detergent with lemon added. Sounds strange, but it has worked for years now, and it seems with contacts if it is working well do not change anything.
I was told that since I had been wearing hard contacts for so many years, the new soft lens would not be suitable for me - so gas permable it is.

I have tried contact lenses in the past but have had a lot of trouble with dry eyes. I only wear them occasionally - swimming, sailing etc. I have been to the optometrist again last week and I have trialed a different pair. They are fantastic and I will most probably go back to wearing lenses most of the time. The lenses are slightly more expensive than the standard ones - though that doesn't bother me if they work well. It is worth trying different types if the first ones aren't successful.

I have tried contact lenses with little joy, managed to wear them for a whole day on two occasions - a Robbie Williams concert and when I got married (oh the important events in ones life!!!). I find they irritate my eyes so much it is unbearable - and I have persevered with the few types I've tried as much as I could tolerate!
The optometrists I had seen were nice, but a friend who has had the same problems, recommended his optometrist to whom he paid around $200 for 12 months of trialling several different types/brands of lense until he found the perfect fit for his eyes. After a bit of investigation I have found that quite a few good optometrists offer this service so I am going to give it a go. It would be so nice to go without glasses and prescription sunglasses, especially now that summer has kicked in!
