Re: How do you cook a whole chicken in a slow cooker? - 14 years ago
Roast beef is great in the crockpot. Just rub it with a spice rub and cook it according to its weight following the instruction booklet.by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk

Sorry canids but just a quick reply. Yes, we are in Jakarta (I really must create a new log-in as I can't figure out how to change my user name) and Friday's events were so upsetting. The people here are gorgeous but unfortunately there is a minority that ruin it for others. Life is so different from NZ. Re: Food Processor - 14 years ago
I agree with your husbands comment Korimako. On Saturday, I left my Kitchen Aid on the kitchen bench kneading a batch of bread when five minutes later there was this almighty crash and it had vibrated itself off the granite bench onto the solid marble floor. BUT it was still on its side kneading away and still works fine! I can't believe there was no damage! Note to self: Buy one of thoseby Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: If anyone is like me around here they don't look - 14 years ago
I looove my Kitchen Aid food processor and use it heaps - it has three bowls (small, medium and large) so it does whatever quantities you need. A warning - they are not cheap BUT it's the old adage "you get what you pay for"by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Interesting things - 14 years ago
Irene, give George your stainless steel soap for his fishing bag as you don't need one for the kitchen. Just use the kitchen taps or even the sink - they are stainless steel and are just as effective.by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: 5 Minute Artisan Bread - 14 years ago
I have never owned a breadmaker as I have never really felt the need for one - it is not difficult to throw ingredients into a free-standing mixer which does the kneading, leave for a while to rise and then bake in the oven. I am still making the artisan bread. However, I tend to use it more for pizza bases than loaves of bread as every time I make a loaf or rolls, they are demolished almosby Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: What Vegetables to have - 14 years ago
How are you serving the beef? Will you plate up in the kitchen or put it in a serving dish on the table? If the latter, then I would think the aligot should be in a covered vegetable dish and placed on the table also. It could then be passed around followed by the beef. But if you are plating up the beef in the kitchen, then I would put a round of potato on each plate, a pile of beef on top aby Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Products with Palm Oil - 14 years ago
Most vegetable oils are palm oil based and many every day products have vegetable oil in them. However, I would point out that whilst some palm oil plantations may be ecological disasters from the deforestation, there are also a number that are ecologically aware. In addition, some of them provide much needed health and educational infrastructure to rural villages. I have a major palm oil grby Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Chocolate Advertising - 14 years ago
P.S. In addition to being the devils' advocate, I am a serious chocoholic and I am looking forward to my husband taking me to the Cadbury factory in Bournville, UK in two weeks time for a veritable chocolate feast. Hopefully, they still have it right at that end of the world!by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: My dried chillies... - 14 years ago
I just keep them whole in a decorative jar and use them from there. And yes the flavour is the same. I just use them in place of fresh chilli in any recipe. I used dried chillies to make harissa and it worked fine although it was VERY fiery! But that was more because of the type of chilli I used rather than because they were dried. Not too sure about putting them into oil as I believe therby Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Chocolate Advertising - 14 years ago
I am going to be the devils advocate here but as an investor with a share portfolio, I expect any company that I invest in to constantly review operations, costs, etc, and to maximise its return to shareholders. If Cadbury's can maximise profits in a difficult economy by replacing cocoa butter with palm oil, the reason they are doing so is to meet shareholder expectations (and most probably, thby Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Chocolate Advertising - 14 years ago
Strictly speaking, white chocolate isn't actually chocolate as it doesn't contain any cocoa solids. It does contain cocoa butter which is why it is referred to as a chocolate but a number of countries do not consider it to be a chocolate. In terms of a block of chocolate to be shared with the family, we love the Cadbury's which is manufactured in the UK - it tastes completely different from tby Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk

Butterscotch pie or butterscotch self-saucing pudding. It might be sugar overload but for a sweet-toothed dessert addict like myself, it would be heaven on a plate!by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk

Same proportions Irene - i.e. for 1/2 cup of flour, use 1/2 teaspoon BP. Although I always heap my teaspoons when doing this so you may want to do that also.by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk

Tammy, I've just moved into a new house also so please feel free to send the reject house-shaped biscuits my way And there will be no cooking in our house this weekend - out of 217 cartons, we still have 92 left to unpack............by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk

About your query on how to direct them to the plughole, you could take a photo of the plughole, enlarge it on the computer and then cut the photo into segments and that could be the basis for the jigsaw puzzle. Alternatively, don't cut up the photo of the plug but hide it in the inside cover of the book that they have to find.by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Chilli Con Carne - 14 years ago
That's a lot of meat and beans. How many people do you think it would serve? Keeping in mind that the Mexican accompaniments are usually quite substantial so if it was used in tacos or burritos I guess it would feed up to 10 people? If just served with rice, then maybe 8?by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk

It sounds like a giant sausage roll and it would be an easy meal to please kids and a husband who refuses to eat couscous! Even my 8 year old had seconds of the couscous salad last night but my husband won't touch it!by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Good all round pan.... - 14 years ago
I love my scanpans and have a host of them in different shapes and sizes (thanks Sharon for putting me on to them ). Unfortunately, I bought mine at a time when they had just changed the manufacturing process which led to problems with the surface two years down the track. However, the company stood by the lifetime guarantee and have replaced all of them and the problem hasn't recurred. I wasby Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk

Didn't cook last weekend as we were out for dinner on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday lunch (which went until dinner time). Nor will I be cooking this weekend as we fly to Singapore tonight. So even though I'm not cooking there will be plenty of foodie delights over the weekend!by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk

No problem Ngaire. Its easy to forget that life in the tropics is not at all tropical when indoors. Airconditioning is always pumped up so a jacket is required and we sleep under a duvet at night. Likewise, we holiday in the snow so buy merino wool clothing.by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

I actually prefer crab to crayfish or lobster. I had crab claws as a bar snack on Friday night and I wish I knew how to do them as a snack. They were shelled but still had part of the claw attached as a "handle" to pick them up and eat them - delicious and so easy to munch on, as usually eating crab is a bib and finger bowl affair.by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Wedding gift - 14 years ago
Don't discount the idea of a woollen underlay. We live in the tropics and sleep in an airconditioned bedroom with both a woollen underlay and a duvet - not for warmth but for comfort as the underlay gives us a better sleep. Actually, change that to "used to sleep with a woollen underlay.". We upgraded to a feather one and that is even better still.by Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Majorly stressed... - 14 years ago
Irene, the best way to deal with it is to take 30 minutes at the start of each day and make a detailed list of what needs to be done. As you go through the day and more work comes in, add it to the list. As you complete tasks, delete them off the list. It's not rocket science but the psychological benefits of doing this really make it worthwhile. I swear by it and you know how hectic my schedby Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: favourite slow cooker recipes - 14 years ago
I make caramelised onions in the crockpot - I find it easier as I often end up burning them when I do them on the hob. I do a large batch and freeze half. Slice the onions, add a generous dob of butter and cook for about a couple of hours. Then add some balsamic, some seedy mustard and a little sugar. Stir through and cook for about half an hour. No exact times as it depends on how much onioby Lynette - PNG - Foodlovers Food Talk
