Re: Milk weirdly solidifying when heated - 5 years ago
I read that the new plastic containers that have the black inner are the problem. I have had the same problem with Lacto free milk and still within its use by date. a comment was made to me recently that the milk we are getting in the supermarket is not fresh milk per se but powdered milk mixed to make it last longer. I dont know how much truth was in that statement but it was from a farming fby Helen Bell - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Restaurants to recommend - 7 years ago
Cinnamon is my local so good and they have opened a smaller one -Crudo at Braid rd a bit more upmarket but food was lovely. Stopped in Cambridge on our way back from Mangakino last Saturday and had a beautiful dinner at Alpha Kitchen - an old pub but the food was divine and the service amazing. It was a rowing day and heaps of people from the venue there so we were squeezed in a little tableby Helen Bell - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Phasing in the grey - 8 years ago
I let mine go grey in my early 50's after being blonde most of my life. I had a year of plaster, moon boot etc due to achilles issues and decided it was too hard to keep up regular visits to the hairdresser having to rely on someone else to take me as I wasnt able to drive.. That was 7 years ago. Best decision I have made. I have a great hairdresser who cuts my hair to suit me which is importby Helen Bell - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Wooden blinds - 8 years ago
Ailsa where abouts are you - country wide - In Hamilton we have the blind cleaner man and he is really reasonable and does a brilliant job. Check your yellow pages ad and you may find a contractor. Alternatively there is an attachment for most vacuum cleaners but it is a time consuming job. Helen B.by Helen Bell - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Carpet advice needed - 8 years ago
Hi TPANDV No you are not out of date. Wool lasts longer and does not create static electricity that the others do. Rhino and Polyester both track and are cold whereas wool creates warmth and doesnt track or fade as much as the man made fibres. Rhino also have also had a problem with the backings coming off and lifting. Helen Bby Helen Bell - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: The Bone Clocks - David Mitchell - 8 years ago
You got further than I did Helen. I got about 1/2 way through and flagged it. its still sitting with the book mark in it but it was not a good read. It will be going with the other books next week to the cancer lodge. Helen Bby Helen Bell - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Gas Heaters - 8 years ago
We have a gas wall heater that heats our whole home - 2 storey - and have no issues with condensation, but the neighbours have a gas free standing heater and have major condensation problems. Helen B.by Helen Bell - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Restaurant Grumble - 8 years ago
interesting you bring this up Helen. We were recently in Melbourne and dined at Vue de Monde and were told that same thing. When 8 p.m came and we were now where near our finished meal there was no hassle and we continued on. Obviously not a problem there but it is a top end restaurant and they were extremely busy. We were amazed to even get in at short notice. Helen b.by Helen Bell - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Businesses worth supporting - 8 years ago
Hi All For those of you in Hamilton, I have discovered some time go Chef Ready Meats. They sell mainly to restaurants and the like but wholesale to the public and a lot cheaper than the supermarkets. They are out Te Rapa in Simsey Pl and they will send you a list of their meats and I now order once a week all my meat and its bagged up ready to go in the portion sizes I have asked for. Re: Chicken Thighs - 8 years ago
I use the thighs for several different recipes, including stuffing with cream cheese and apricots and then wrap them in bacon and cook 20-25 mins or in a Chilli Ginger sauce and roast them . Stuffed with feta, sundried tomatoes and pesto and then in stir fries and cut into cubes. Helen B.by Helen Bell - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Woman in Gold - 8 years ago
We watched it Monday night and loved it. Yes it could have been trimmed but take into account the story line and I think you may have missed some of the legal points. We were in Vienna a few years ago and kept nudging each other - been there - remember that - it was a walk down memory lane for us. Helen B.by Helen Bell - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Double sinks - 9 years ago
We have completed kitchen renovations at home and I have 2 separate sinks. We have an L shaped kitchen with 1 sink near the dishwasher with an insinkerator in it and this cant be seen from the dining area and a second one that I use beside the gas hobs for water, jug etc. It works brilliantly for us. Hi Vanessa I have Helens Foodlover cook book which has a fabulous recipe using Israeli couscous in it. I will search it out for you as I often make it for bbq's when I have a few coming. It has herbs, capsicums, and other bits in it but it is tasty. Helen B.by Helen Bell - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Hawkes Bay - Napier - 9 years ago
Hi Vanessa I presume you mean push bikes not road bikes. There is a neat ride from the outskirts of Napier right through to Havelock North and up the coast. Most of the ride is boardwalk or concrete and it goes right along the water front. A really good part of the coast line. There are numerous wineries of course and Craggy Range do a fabulous lunch as to Clearview Estate and Elephant Hilby Helen Bell - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Brand of paint - 9 years ago
We only specify Resene in our design work Helen, as it is more environmentally friendly and you can get low emission paints that don't stink the house out. Far better paint quality also imho. Colour range is far superior also with Resene with varying ranges. Whites & Neutrals, Karen Walker range (which has some beautiful colours in it) plus their standard BSS range Helen B.by Helen Bell - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Hand Held Mandolin - 9 years ago
I have had an Oxo one for many moons now and love it - use it regularly and like Stephanie have had the odd nick or two from it - being in a hurry to do something and not using the guard. Top of finger but more finger nails - thank goodness for long nails I suppose. Lesson learnt - use guard. Helen B.by Helen Bell - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Sous Vide - 9 years ago
I use sous vide cooking at home and with great success. Have done chicken, (which was pan seared after to give it a crispy finish) beef and lamb. The sous vide cooker we bought doubles as a slow cooker which is brilliant - holds its heat and bonus is that it is teflon coated so easy to clean afterwards - especially using it as a slow cooker. I used glad wrap once and went out and bought a vacby Helen Bell - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Faviurite books this summer - 9 years ago
I picked up an old book whilst away - True Blue by David Baldacci which I enjoyed and have now started reading The Rose Petal Beach by Dorothy Koomson which is written in a different way to what I normally read in that its written about specific persons and how they connect to the bigger picture but I read until nearly midnight last night as its gripping and I am enjoying it.
