Re: Pastry - Expiry Date - 2 days ago
Thank you Marnie and TPANDAV. I have some small tartlet forms that I have not tried out so far, left-over custard and apricots that need using up. I shall give the pastry the sniff test and take it from there.by Chris - Foodlovers Food Talk

Pastry - Expiry Date - 4 days ago
I have in my freezer an unopened packet of Edmonds pastry sheets with the expiry of last October. Would it be worth using it or would you chuck it? I knew it was there but I just didn't get around to using it.by Chris - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Not My Day Today - 12 days ago
I am pleased to report that the plum cake was edible with copious amounts of custard. The inside was cooked but the outside and underneath were quite brown but not so much that you felt you had to cut off bits. There were not enough plums given the height of the cake although the top was totally covered. I froze the rest for dessert. The taste was fine. I was just relieved that I didn't havby Chris - Foodlovers Food Talk
Not My Day Today - 14 days ago
It seems to be one of those days where things are not going right for me in the kitchen. I made Annabel Langbein's Vanilla Plum Cake and I had a 23 cm tin ready when I glanced at the instructions and saw 20 cm mentioned. I got my 20 cm tin out and when I put the mixture in thought that it was a big amount of mixture for a 20 cm tin and perhaps the 23 cm one would have been better after all.by Chris - Foodlovers Food Talk
Cast Iron Grill Pan - 24 days ago
I have one of those grill pans that were a New World promotion. It does the job very well and I like it. However, I am having some difficulty cleaning it. I use a brush and hot water to loosen any food particles, wipe the pan, making sure that I clean between the grill lines, dry the pan and then place it on a gas burner to for 3 or so minutes on low to dry the pan thoroughly. Re: Netflix - 24 days ago
Last night I finished watching a 7 part series on Netflix, called The Boy Who Swallowed The Universe. It's the story of two brothers growing up in a family where the mother used to be a drug addict and where the stepfather is still dealing to provide for the family. There is quite a bit of physical violence but also a fair bit of humour and warmth. The series was made in Australia and is baseby Chris - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Netflix - 8 weeks ago
Some of you might have enjoyed the Australian documentary Love on the Spectrum on Netflix. I recently discovered US Love on the Spectrum. I was a bit dubious how it would compare to the Australian one and after watching Series One, I am now enjoying Series Two. I can recommend the series. It follows very much the Australian model and it is interesting how certain traits are so recognisable inby Chris - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Plum Sauce - 8 weeks ago
I will be making plum sauce and would like to try the Edmonds recipe. The recipe calls or mace and I have not been able to find it in the local supermarkets. Is mace essential for taste or is there perhaps a substitute that I could try. I am reluctant to order online. Thank you for your thoughts. Last year I made a plum sauce with an Asian influence. Re: Netflix - 3 months ago
Thank you for the recommendation, Irene. I just finished watching the second series of High On The Hog, also on Netflix. The first series explores the origin of foods that the slaves brought with them from West Africa to the US and the second series follows on from that. There are interesting photos and memories of older generations of negroes interwoven with video clips from protests against slavby Chris - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: French Roast Chicken - 3 months ago
Thanks for posting the link, Irene. I had just about given up on being able to roast a tender and moist whole or butterflied chicken. Believe me, I have tried many recipes over the years. This was probably going to be my last shot at it but lo and behold - Success! I didn't have a dry white wine but a nice Pinot Gris and it worked well. The stuffing was so nice and not gluggy that I might dby Chris - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Just an Xmas Moan - 3 months ago
Oh Griz, I shouldn't laugh but I did. You had me with the pre-diabetic who eats chocolate and caramel desserts. You are a saint, I couldn't do it and TPANDAV is quite right with her comment that Christmas dinners in the past (I am talking about many years ago) were simpler. It was still stressful but the choices were limited and that helped. I feel exhausted when I read about what people areby Chris - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Harry the pooch's latest adventure - 4 months ago
Gran, I am glad you could take your mind of the scan although it made you so sad. There wine lots of times when our memories of our pets will get triggered. Hopefully they will mostly be the ones where we laughed. Hope everything is alright otherwise. ‘wine?’ ‘Will’ of course. What was I thinking? Re: Crevice Brushes - 4 months ago
Marnie, this was the first time I ordered from Temu and it was straightforward and quick. I understand that it might be best not to instal the App because of potential gathering of data and also being inundated with emails in the future. I ordered from the website. I would have preferred to buy from a business here and spent considerable time searching for the type of brush I need, alas thereby Chris - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Harry the pooch's latest adventure - 4 months ago
I sympathise Gran. Like Irene and others we believe that our pets are family members and it makes me so sad that often they are better treated than some children. I just don’t understand. All the best Gran for getting through a difficult day.by Chris - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Crevice Brushes - 4 months ago
My crevice brushes that I ordered from Temu arrived today and I couldn't be more pleased. The bristles are long enough to get right down to where the dirt sits and fit all the very narrow spaces. I wonder why our hardware stores don't seem to sell something like this because I am sure I am not the only one who gets frustrated trying to clean narrow spaces. They are also good for the part of slby Chris - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

I so miss our dog, It’s been over three years since we had to have her euthanised and I can still see rhe fear in her eyes. It really pains me. It’s one of several reasons (one is age) that we can’t put ourselves through that again.by Chris - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

R Dawn, regarding using a magazine. Some of you might remember that many years ago the Listener’s size was foolscap. My recipe said to sit the tin on the Listener to avoid the bottom of the cake getting too dark. Worked like a charm.by Chris - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Butter - 4 months ago
For baking and cooking I buy on price and make sure it’s a 500g block. For special days where we might enjoy baguette and cheesesI buy Lewis Road butter with sea salt. I have seen Kerry Gold just once where I live but every so often spotted Butter from Normandy which I have tried. I prefer Lewis Road because it’s NZ made and good quality.by Chris - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Nuts on a Christmas cake - 4 months ago
I put almonds on top of the cake and they turn a nice golden colour. If the cake needs longer than expected and the almonds are a nice colour, I cover the tin loosely with tinfoil till the cake is done. We don’t like our Christmas cake iced and I have been doing this for many years.by Chris - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Crevice Brushes - 4 months ago
Thank you, jj. I have tried a dental brush as well. I shall order a set of crevice brushes from Temu. If the bristles are too short for the job I can use the brushes elsewhere. They cost very little. I was just curious if someone knew about them. I rue the day that shower was installed. Live and learn.by Chris - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
