Re: How to stop Milo/hot chocolate forming a rock hard block - 9 months ago
I know it might seem obvious, but make sure everyone uses a dry spoon to get the Milo to the mug Other than that keeping your pantry door closed while cooking will stop a lot of moisture getting in there in the first place! You know those little gauze-type drawstring bags that jewelery, etc items come in? Put a tablespoon of rice in one and keep it in the jar with whatever is prone to goingby Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Victor Borge - 9 months ago
I remember Victor Borge from quite a number of years ago. I shall have to save the YouTube page(s) to watch later. He was very funny but it's a few years since I've seen anything about or by him. Thank you for the heads up, Ali W.by Lorna - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Yes, Dawn is right: the date in the list of posts shows as 05/28/23 for today, so it's easily confused because that is the American date format. Individuall posts have the date shown in the other format, ile. 28/05/23 for today. It's the web-builders fault for not being consistent, but once you know (and remember) this anomoly, it's easier to see when the last post was made.by Lorna - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: How many pints in a gallon? - 10 months ago
MayaGreen, I was born in the UK and before the UK changed to metrics we had all sorts of different measurments to learn at school: pounds, shillings and pence, pounds and ounces, quarts and gallons, yards and miles, etc, etc, so as soon as I saw your query I was taken back to my school days and 8 pints = 1 Gallon. The thing about those ancient measurements is there was no co-relationship bby Lorna - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Pantry moths and flour - 11 months ago
I used my bag in which I found some greeblies. I just sifted it all twice, put it into a 2 litre ice cream container and put it in the freezer for a month, till I needed it. I'm still here, about a year later. You can tell I don't do much baking these days, just use the flour in the crumbing process for things like schnitzel, or fish, etc.by Lorna - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Pantry moths and flour - 12 months ago
Karena, For years I've been using bay leaves scattered on the shelves and in sealable containers of dried foot, such as items like chickpeas, rice, etc. For my flour, I'm convinced there are pantry moth larvae in them when purchased, so I immediately put the bag into a plastic bag and seal it, then place it in the freezer for 3 or 4 days. Then I sift the contents into a 2 litre ice cream contaiby Lorna - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Kitchen timer advice needed - 1 year ago
What about using a timer on either your computer, if you have one, or your mobile phone. On my computer I've got a nifty little time that you can choose the sound it makes plus many other features, while being easy to use. Quick to set to ANY time you want, complete with a title for the event. It's called HourGlass and it's free. On my phone (Android) I've got Reminder, but I don't use thatby Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk

What about a pre-cooked local food delivery service? Here in Whitianga one of our local cafes does these at $35 for 3 meals, free delivery. All the meals are delivered at once and you can freeze them for future use. There is usually a choice of 5 different meals. Or if you live in a larger community, perhaps there's Meals on Wheels.by Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk

and I'm very happy with it. It is not one of the types with a pull out basket; It's a similar shape to those, but this one has a pull-down door (easily removeable for cleaning) and multi-grooves for sliding in the three open-weave shelves. They allow the air to circulate all around the food, so turning shouldn't really be necessary. I have found, however, that it does pay to turn the food for eby Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Cyclone Gabrielle... - 1 year ago
Thank you for your kind thoughts, Irene and everyone else, but I really feel a bit of a fraud, though a very happy fraud. You see, I live in a small retirement village of 27 houses and for some reason, we went almost unscathed. All day on Sunday we had rain and very strong winds. Monday the rain and wind intensified and I kept looking out of the window to see if the two rainwater drains in theby Lorna - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Floods and are you OK? - 1 year ago
Chris, thank you for your kind thoughts. Re my appointment, I have already been given and alterntive date of 16th Feb. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see how we get out of Whitianga. Probably have to drive just past Tairua and turn off to go through Whangamata and Paeroa. Will add a couple of hours to the trip but will be worth it provided all their roads are open. It's a guessing gamby Lorna - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Floods and are you OK? - 1 year ago
Thank you for your concern, Helen. I am warm, dry and comfortable but will have to wait for my specialists consultation which was supposed to be tomorrow. Could take months to get another appointment, but then, it will probably take months for the roads out of Whitianga to be passable. I don't know how they're going to get supplies into Whitianga, all the roads are unusable, especially the maiby Lorna - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

This might sound a little bizzare, but I love strawberries with a little Balsamic vinegar and black pepper on them. Would that work as a swap for the tomatoes if you smashed the strawberries? You could add a bit of natural yoghurt to make up the quantity needed as a sauce.by Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Family Recipe Cookbook - Gift Ideas - 1 year ago
I have all my recipes recorded in MS OneNote, which is just like a physical book. It has a section for each type of cooking, eg, meat, vegetables, air fryer, desserts, Japanese, etc, etc. It's just like a real physical recipe book, except I can add to it (or delete if necessary) as I wish. I must have a couple of thousand recipes I've copied and saved from various places on the Internet, newspby Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk

TPANDAV, we've had eggplant in our supermarkets for a few weeks now, albeit quite small but still very tasty. One eggplant does me two meals easily, more if I'm using them in vegetable medleys cooked in various ways and with various other vegetables. Living on my own, I can get at least two meals using one eggplant and other veges in either stir-fries, oven-bakes or salads. This is one of myby Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk

If you've bought more than one and cooked one that's not to your satisfaction, why not consider mincing the raw one and making something with that. Do you think that might be successful? Just a thought.by Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Ideas for red cabbage please - 1 year ago
Lyn V, I use that recipe too, it's so flavourful. To add more colour, I use a red and a yellow capsicum, cubed, or I slice them thinly and cut the slices in half. Sometimes, if I'm short of time, I cheat with the dressing by using a mix Barkers dressings, such as the Miso & Ginger together with the Coconut & Lime dressings. Makes it somewhat different but still delicious, and as Iby Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk

Chris, I find autopredict a nuisance so I've turned it off on my phone. The one thing I can't find out how to change is something I've never come across before: when using my laptop, if I want to delete something in the middle of a line of text, and I hold the mouse button down and highllight from right to left what I want to delete, the next thing I type comes out written backwards. Re: Stain Removal - 1 year ago
I've got a block of Sard soap that I've had for a few years. I keep it in a plastic box once it's dried from its latest use and it's never failed me. I've removed stains from canvas shoes, food stains down the front of T-shirts, and numerous other uses. It's the best item in my laundry arsenal.by Lorna - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: NZ Butter is there a difference between Brands - 1 year ago
Me, too. I have two pantries: my 'in use' items in the kitchen pantry and a second pantry in the garage (nice and cool). When I finish the 'kitchen' item, I replace it with the second pantry item and add it to my shopping list, with a yellow star beside it to show to buy it when it comes on special. I should add here that I have a shopping app (Our Groceries) which I have set up with aislesby Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Easy tray bake type meal recipes? - 1 year ago
Lyn V, a few years ago I bought a red 3 litre cast iron casserole with lid from Briscoes and paid $49.99 for it. I see the brand is no longer available but a certain TV personality has his name on an identical product and they are now around $150. BUT, they are currently on special at $49.99. I have to say my casserole has lasted the years very well, so despite the very reasonable price, it haby Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk

Here's what I do: UNIVERSAL ONE-PAN DINNER Choose your protein. Chicken, beef, pork, lamb, fish or chickpeas, lentils, butter beans, etc. Many grains and legumes are protein rich. See what veges you have in the fridge or freezer. Be adventurous here: try beetroot, it's delicious roasted, but chop it small or grate it as it takes longer to cook than most vegetables. Suspicious? If it's promoted by many food bloggers, doesn't that say something about its success? I see nothing suspicious. Danube, I have a 4-step folding ladder that is very useful for reaching high places relatively safely. Because it's got an arched handle at the top, I feel quite safe up to the third step, which is high enough to do anything in the house, such as hang curtains etc. They are available in 2, 3 and 4 steps, and even a two step one would be handy in the kitchen, not only for reaching things on theby Lorna - Foodlovers Food Talk
