Re: Crevice Brushes - 4 months ago
I also have a shower with narrow spaces to clean and I use a small paintbrush and hold the bristles together in my hand to stop them splaying out but your shower crevice sounds just too narrow for that sort of treatment. I wonder if an interdental brush would work? Shower designers don't seem to consider cleaning issues.by jj - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Colonial goose - 11 months ago
This is a recipe for Colonial Goose from a book of my mother's. She may have made it at some point as the pages are a bit spotty but it could equally have been one of the other mutton recipes on the same pages. None of them sound very appealing from this distance.by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Saveloys - 11 months ago
Not that this is much help to you J1 but our local butcher makes his own saveloys and they seem to be ok according to my husband.by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk

Beef cut for stirfry - 1 year ago
I have been using rump steak for stirfries for many years but lately the meat has seemed tough and chewy. I don't think I have changed my technique, perhaps it is time I changed my butcher but I was wondering what other beef cuts people used?by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Frozen vegetables are more expensive than fresh - 1 year ago
I don't buy frozen vegetables apart from peas because they don't seem to have much taste to me. I suppose looking at the cost if your fresh veg ends up uneaten and languishing in the chiller frozen veg could become a little less expensive to buy.by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Do you know the name of this shrub - 1 year ago
My plant app thinks it is Hibiscus Mutabilis also known as Confederate Rose. It does look a bit like a hollyhock leaf.by jj - Garden Lovers Forum
Re: WDFF recipe - 2 years ago
I have an old recipe book minus it's covers which contains a recipe for Golden Pudding. You boil together a cup of boiling water, half a cup of sugar and a large tablespoon of golden syrup and pour that over a scone dough in a pudding basin. Steam without the lid on the pudding basin but with the saucepan covered for an hour and a half. I was sidetracked by the medical hints at the end of theby jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Covid news free zones - 2 years ago
A covid news free zone sounds like a splendid idea, you could extend it to be a news free zone. Here in Te Wai Pounamu most of the people we know are very appreciative of Auckland's efforts to contain the virus contrary to news media reporting that we are all agitating for a return to level one. In our area mask wearing and social distancing are very common even in situations where they are notby jj - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Dietary requirements, suggestions please! - 2 years ago
This is Julie's take on frittate in general I am guilty of producing the rubbery variety she mentions so I will have to revisit this. Thanks Griz and J1.by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
Phalaenopsis orchids - 2 years ago
Looking for advice about phalaenopsis. My orchid flowered beautifully for months and eventually dropped all its flowers. I intended to cut it back either to the leaves or to a point on the stem but before I could make up my mind I realised it had started growing again from the end of the stem and looks to be developing more flowers. Should I be fertilising it or just leave it to do its own thing?by jj - Garden Lovers Forum
Re: Rock Cakes - 2 years ago
I remember making eggless rock cakes at school cooking lessons and then everyone throwing them round the bus on the way home....by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: FROZEN VEGETABLES - 2 years ago
Peas are the only frozen vegetables I buy. I have bought frozen stir fry veg once or twice and found them soggy and the sizes of the pieces too irregular to stir-fry well. I tried microwaving them briefly and drying them before stir frying but it didn't help. Great ideas J1. I'll definitely be looking for the coconut powder.by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Christchurch places to eat? - 3 years ago
Riverside Market in Cashel St and Little High Eatery are both very popular areas for a casual lunch, plenty of variety. I'm not sure about Sumner restaurants now. Lyttelton is definitely worth a look. Eruption Brewing for craft beer and food. For a short countryside drive there is the Raspberry Cafe at Tai Tapu, !unch in the garden though you may need to book there. Outdoor eating also at the Oldby jj - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Worcestershire Sauce - 3 years ago
Always have Lea and Perrins for a devilled sausages recipe I make in the winter.Apart from that I use it occasionally as Stephanie 39 does. I think I remember trying the Boss one a long time ago and preferring Lea and Perrins. My father used to plaster it all over any sort of plain meat dish.by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: The illusion of colour - 3 years ago
When we go to England a lot of houses seem to have rooms with very bright colour schemes compared with homes we visit in NZ and I wonder if our bright natural light and clear skies make us prefer neutral colours. On the other hand we did have one English visitor who told me she found New Zealanders love of neutrals rather boring.......by jj - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Memory foam mattress toppers - 3 years ago
We recently bought a new mattress which is probably half as thick again as our previous one. I thought I would need to replace the fitted sheets but they actually fit better than before. I think the length/width of the sheets is as important as the depth when it comes to size.by jj - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Failed chocolate caramel slice – any idea why - 3 years ago
I think I remember getting slightly different results from the golden syrup in a bottle compared to the golden syrup in a tin. From memory also the Pam's bottle syrup was higher in salt than the Chelsea equivalent but that wouldn't make any difference here.by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Savoury sago soup - 3 years ago
Not strictly relevant but I had a look in my mother's 1930s cookbooks. No sago soup but I did find a recipe for tapioca soup which seems to be made of milk, onion , cheese and tapioca. On the same page were a couple of versions of"Waste not want not Soup" which was vegetable water and milk with as much grated vegetables as you had available. There is another recipe for "Cheap Whiteby jj - Foodlovers Food Talk

Fennel - 3 years ago
I bought a fennel bulb today, now wondering what to do with it. I'm thinking of cooking it rather than salad probably, had a bit of a look on the web but wondering if anyone had a favourite recipe and what it goes well with.by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Monkfish ... never again! - 3 years ago
Thankyou for the recipe Meganp. We get a weekly home delivery of fish fillets and every so often it is monkfish which neither of us is all that keen on. We also find it tasteless and the quality of all our fish deliveries is usually excellent so we assumed that was just the way it was. Looking forward to trying this.by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: The No Knead Bread Recipe from J1 - 3 years ago
I would bake more if I wasn't keeping the flour I have for J1s bread which we really like. Seems to have disappeared entirely from the "shelves," on my last online order. Probably just as well........... Pumpkin seeds, linseed, chia.by jj - Foodlovers Food Talk
