Re: Talking to strangers - 18 years ago
Lisa, I know how you feel. My husband is a builder so is often in work gear when we go out to buy, for example, a household lot of whiteware. The shop people serve everyone else in the shop, who usually come in after us, so we leave! The advantage of living in Auckland is that there are other shops to go to.by Stephanie D - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: New Years Eve restaurtants - 18 years ago
Linda, just a word of caution, I spend New Year at Mount Maunganui. I see people eating at cafes and restaurants on New Year. They have paid a lot of money for their tables and meals and are seated outside in the lovely evening only to have drunken teenagers dancing and falling over their tables and into their meals. Re: window tinting and heat in the house - 18 years ago
Lucy, be careful of the stick on tints. They look great to start off with but some of them peel off over time and look terrible. There are also issues with cleaning the windows. Stephanieby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Dishwasher - 18 years ago
Hi Folks I have 2 dish drawers(F&P). They work fine. The only time dishes are wet is when water settles in the top of glasses( upended for washing). The ones with indentations on the bottom( I hope you understand what I am talking about.) I have 2 separate dish drawers so they were the same height in the kitchen. Also you don't need to empty them. You use the clean one and put the dirty dby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Hi Dorthy I'm not an expert but the best I can describe it as - it is the Japanese version of Hot English Mustard. It is made from Horseradish (I think) It is extremely hot and looks like a green paste. Most supermarkets stock it. It is often sold in tubes sometimes in little jars. Hi Sharma and mahek In New Zealand this is the busiest time of the year. We are getting ready for Christmas and the summer holidays. We are all busy baking and shopping for gifts or making gifts. Businesses are also very busy. Most of us do not have enough hours in the day at this time of the year. Many of us are packing up to go on holiday and our children(seniors) are finishing school . We dby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Food Talk

Yes I am glad you have a new photo. After meeting you at dinner, I thought the old photo did not do you justice. The new one is a big improvement. Stephanieby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Capsicums - 18 years ago
I wonder if the coloured ones are grown in the Cook Islands and imported from there- I think I read about that somewhere and perhaps we grow the green ones here? Just a thought. Stephanieby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Christmas barbecue thoughts - 18 years ago
Hi Nellie If you are asking what we do for breakfast on Xmas day other than the mince pies and sparkling, we don't have anything else, as we more than make up for it over the rest of the day. Stephanieby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Food Talk

I always keep mine in the fridge. I can't say how long it lasts as it always gets eaten but at least three weeks. Stephanieby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: cutting back lavender - 18 years ago
Yes Tammy, I agree with Alison. But wait until you need a bit of stress relief until you start chopping- its such a great feeling! You'll be amazed at how many other things you will find that need a good "haircut"by Stephanie D - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Hamper Container ideas? - 18 years ago
How about cardboard File Boxes- I don't know the price but you could decorate the outside or put stckers/pens inside for the children to decorate. Go to the Plastic Centre or similar they have heaps of different containers or even the $2 shop, its amazing how you can just see the "right" thing as you wander. Nothing really creative here but its better than nothing. Stephanieby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Christmas barbecue thoughts - 18 years ago
Khaki, there isn't a lot to tell. We don't get dressed up because eating prawns etc gets a bit messy. We usually start the day with sparkling wine and Xmas tarts( family traditional thing) - this tends to be quite early as we are a running/biking family. Then I make the salad, nothing fancy just lettuce, peppers, spring onions whatever I have or whatevers fairly cheap but I don't put the dressingby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: xmas cake top cracked - 18 years ago
Yes you are right Linda, often when cooking cakes like this you need to cover the top to prevent this from happening. I don't think it is a problem , I think it just adds to it's homemade appeal, commercial products are too perfect! But if you don't like how it looks turn it upside down to serve- you may need to slice a bit of the top off to get it to sit flat. Re: Christmas barbecue thoughts - 18 years ago
Hi Khaki We do the BBQ thing with seafood for Xmas Day. Our group is quite small but we just nibble all day really! The weather is usually showery and we have all day. I make a couple of salads and then the cooks( husband and teenage son) take over. Have the prawns- eat , chat rest, clean up. Then later the crayfish. later on oysters or something similar. Salad eaters help themselves. I also haveby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Contact Lenses - 18 years ago
Hi Carol I , too, have been wearing contacts for about 38 years. I do still have a pair of glasses as sometimes my eyes just feel tired and need a rest. My contacts go in at 5.30 in the morning and come out at 11.00 at night. I now use monthly disposables and my son wears daily disposables. You will hardly even know you have have them in. I am a regular surfie and a water skiier and they have nby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: BBQ - 18 years ago
JPS, you are so lucky to have a new cooking experience. I agree with Amy that almost anything can be cooked on the BBQ. Only do it all year round not just in summer. If its not undercover, a beach umbrella will protect the person doing the cooking. There are many books and websites to help you with ideas. Cooking roasts outdoors sure beats cleaning an oven everytime!by Stephanie D - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: OAMC - 18 years ago
I think many of us cook for the freezer. I get my emergency meals ready in March/April when all the produce is cheap. I make things like Kaye suggested. I also make pasta sauces. I always have a variety of meatballs freeflowed, in the freezer. Often when I am cooking I bake double and freeze one. I usually set aside a weekend( its never a rainy one no matter how organised I am) , I have already sby Stephanie D - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Loquats - 18 years ago
From what my friends tell me, our NZ loquats are really tiny compared to the ones grown in other countries, so maybe that is why we don't cook with them much.by Stephanie D - Foodlovers Food Talk
