I am just about to order some turmeric plants from Russell Fransham at his Subtropicals gardens.
They are $15 per plant plus postage.

The plants are dormant over winter and start to come to life in November.
Apparently they like a raised garden bed with good drainage.
I look forward to reporting back once mine take hold.

Didn't realise you could grow them in NZ. Would they grow in Welly?

They don't like being wet and cold so if you can avoid that then yes they can grow.
I would possibly suggest in a pot and indoors over winter and out for summer but if you email and ask Russell he will be much more specific.
