Sushi is very popular here in Brussels but not widely available so I have been delighting our new friends with some homemade sushi. My question is the Sushi rice is expensive for a small packet, has anyone tried making it with another rice such as risotto or paella rice, there is plenty of it available here, but no short grain rice.

Hi Katherine
I'm not so sure about risotto or paella rice but at a push they would probably do. Can you get a medium grain or a calrose rice - it would be a better bet. Don't suppose you've got such a thing as an asian supermarket in brussels?!? they'd have either of those as they are used widely in asian food - Chinese, Japanese etc.

I use plain old short grain rice if I cant get any sushi rice, and it is a fraction of the price. Just adjust the cooking time and you should be fine!
