They were first mentioned on Foodlovers in 2003 and again in 2006, but they don't seem to have taken off. I haven't come across them yet and would love to see what they look like. From comments, they are 'pretty' but earthy to taste.

Well, you just live and learn. I have never heard of these before now. It seems they are available on line, from Halfords.... whoever they are: [www.halfords.co.nz]

Tinks
The variety of plant that produces the earth gems would have been registered under the Plants Variety Act (assuming that it’s been protected in some fashion). In short, this gives the person who created a new variety of plant the exclusive right to reproduce that plant. Examples of other plants registered under the Act include new apple varieties (for instance I think that Jazz is registered under the Act). A registered plant variety right isn’t a patent, as that’s a different type of intellectual property right altogether, but has the same broad effect.
"Earth gems" is just a brand name for whatever the vegetable is (never heard of them before). I was curious so checked the trade marks register - it's a registered trade mark in relation to vegetables and so I assume that a canny vegetable grower is trying a bit of marketing in an effort to get a new vegetable off the shelves and on to our dinner plates.

to me they tasted of a bit of a bland new potato with slight yam flavour. There was a slight 'dirt' aftertaste but not enought to put me off. I really liked them with salt, pepper and butter and the cold ones were fried up just like cold potato. I wouldn't spend that money on a day to day vegie but for a special 'potato salad' they would look amazing. Now, I'm too scared to try a jerusalem artichoke again as the only time I've tried them it was like eating a mouthful of dirt, yuck!
