Sardines in Jamie Oliver recipes

Hi everyone, I do love Jamie Oliver recipes ( just love his latest VEG book) but some of them call for sardines - obviously fresh ones as he sometimes says in the recipe that they need to be boned. Just wondering has anybody tried a substitute? I know we have plenty of canned sardines but just not sure that the texture would be right. Thanks y’all!! :-)

I think trevally is a good substitute for fresh oily fish such as sardines and mackerel. Obviously a different structure but the flavour is much the same.

In our local PnS in the seafood department, they often have fish similar to the images displayed for Jamie O's sardine recipe. Not sure if they are sardines, but they look very much the same and sometimes are fresh and sometimes are frozen
