What is wrong with celery? October 08, 2014 03:53AM |

Lately I have had requests not to put celery in recipes as it is so polarising and someone told me that they would never even have it in the house.
While I don't necessarily sit around eating big chunks of raw celery, surely soups, stews, casseroles and stocks all need celery for flavour.
What do you think?
(Oh my goodness - I have just come back and corrected my spelling and grammar - eek, sorry!)

Love celery...however if I have to buy it I do find I have heaps left over and wonder what to do with it. Perhaps that is the reason people dont like to use it. I grow mine so just take a stick at a time when needed. I find it hard to believe they dont like the taste, certainly dont find it polarising at all.

I think in general people are tending to eat a smaller variety of veges, a kind of dumbing down of what we eat. I almost always have celery in my fridge, and almost always throw it out with only a few sticks used up...I say put it in more recipes so that I don't waste so much! Surely the point of recipes is to get people trying things they don't usually try?

I love celery. Occasionally I might have to compost the last couple of stalks, but otherwise I think people are missing out on a very nice vegetable.

I hardly ever buy celery, and have never grown it, and I don't really know why. I don't mind it but never get through even a half bunch let alone a full bunch. I agree that it is a useful addition to the flavour base of stews and meaty soups, and it is crucial in Caponata and in Waldorf Salad. I don't add it (or any other vegetables) to stocks.
I have a few friends who can't abide it.
A good reminder Helen . I will buy some and find uses for it!

I have a number of friends and celery is on their hate list. I love it. Cooked with carrots in a cheese sauce, casseroles, but not curries, chopped up with cheese and walnuts for a delicious sandwich filling and celery soup used to be a favourite but only with home grown celery as the bought produce is seriously lacking in flavour.

I like celery too, but prefer to buy in half measures or the packaged celery stalks. I read a hint from a Foodlover on this site (thank you whoever you were) a few years ago to wrap celery in tinfoil and it keeps fresh for a good while, and this is what I do with it. I love it stuffed with cottage cheese, lovely and crunchy and old fashioned. I use it in soups, casseroles and stews, whatever.

Dawn.

Love celery - in stews, casseroles, stir fries, and with our new fridge (Samsung French door) it has a bottom draw which has the choice of fresh, deli or chillled in it and I can keep celery for up to 3 weeks good as when I bought it.
Son in law hates it but its the texture of it that he doesnt like, yet I love the crunch of it especially with cottage cheese for lunch with a couple of crackers.

I never have any trouble getting through a bunch of celery. I cut the stalks and put them in seal-able bags - they last for a long time in there too ( much like the tin foil method I would imagine. I freeze the leaves and odd bits of stalk, along with leek tops and chicken bones from roast chicken ( all in different bags) for stock. That way when celery is expensive and I want to make soup - I have just what I need in the freezer.
I love celery, fennel and orange salad, and my youngest loves apple, almond and celery salad. I use it in soups and casseroles as well. Any creole cooking absolutely demands it too

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with celery! I have to put it in veggie soup and coleslaw, and also homemade stock, but I can't abide it as a cooked veg - maybe having to eat it as a child in white sauce blerk!! (sorry Mum), and as a raw veggie I find it quite salty as I don't use salt in my cooking or add it to any dishes afterwards. I believe it's a natural diuretic??

Hi Helen, Is it due to the taste or smell of the celery that you are requested not to include it in your Recipe?
I like to cook celery soup with potatoes, carrot, onions, corn and mushrooms. To me, Healthy celery enhances flavor of dishes I cook.

I am neutral with celery; I like it in stews, casseroles, etc, and I don't mind just a little, finely sliced, in coleslaw, etc. I don't use a lot so when I buy it, I straight away slice it up and freeze it, au naturelle and use only the amount I need at the time. That way, I can buy a whole celery, which is cheaper than a half, as per usual. It's a winter veg for me, so I only get it in salads, etc when I come across it elsewhere.

I do buy celery once a month probably but some weeks it all gets used and others it festers in the bottom of the fridge. Hadn't thought to freeze the leaves and stalky bits for stocks (thanks Sunday )
Here it is used in vege soup, casseroles in the crock pot, stirfries, salads, kids lunch/snacks, fried rice.

Hi cantabcook.
My celery also festers in the bottom of the fridge too sometimes. Within a week, I try to finish it by cooking in many ways like for soups, stir fry with meat, bean sprouts and etc. Sometimes in the end, still cannot finish the celery.

I'm not a fan of celery - it's a natural diuretic and definitely works on me, something I don't want. Parsley has that effect on me too, so I avoid that as well. I don't really like the taste of it either. I'd never eat it cooked, have memories of being served celery soup, and always take it out of purchased chow mein. The only way I like it is in Waldorf Salad, where it seems to be balanced by the apples, walnuts and dressing, it does have a great texture. I will eat it as sticks with dip but prefer other veges for this. My kids don't like it at all.

Another possible reason that people have asked Helen not to include celery in her recipes is that it is one of the most heavily sprayed vegetables, and it is uncommon to find organic celery.
