ovens
Posted by Memmi
It looks as though I may need a new oven before Christmas. Not a lot of time to research. Had been thinking of induction, but will now probably settle for a gas hob, as we already have gas and it will be easy to instal. The two we have been looking at are Westinghouse and Smeg. We will be getting a freestanding stove. Our last one was an Ilve with a double oven. We only really started looking today and will have to decide by Monday. Any helpful advice out there please? Thanks
Unfortunately we moved to a house with a low-grade F & P and that's not much good either. Fpr example, the fan stays on no matter what setting I use, the grill doesn't get hot enough, the seal doesn't work. I rarely do any baking, so can't justify the expense of replacing it. If I did get a new oven I'd look at Bosch, as our other Bosch appliances have been great.
I can't say I've had as good an experience as others with Bosch ovens. I had one about 6 years ago and now have one currently. The main thing I can't stand about both is the dreadful hot spots in them. Both of them have one in the back right corner, and it is a problem not just with baking, but roasts and pretty much everything.
The best oven I've had was a Westinghouse - good rack arrangement inside, so more usable space than a Bosch, held temperature well, wasn't too noisy, no hot spots, and I could bake evenly on 3 shelves at a time. This was when it was 8 years old too.
The worst was a low end 90cm F&P free standing range that I inherited in our last house. That model was later re-branded to become an Elba and I can understand why. It took forever to heat, very uneven heating, only 4 rack positions, grill was pointless because it covered only about 2/3 of the roof space, noisy as anything, the gas cooktop didn't go very high or very low, difficult to clean. Truly awful.
Good luck - hard thing to do with not much time to research!

I agree definitely dont go near smeg I personally had to replace the thermostate every few years, but also they are very hard to get repaired and cost a fortune for parts. I found their customer service non existant. The first thermostate blew in under 2 years of use but since I had purchased it a few months before installing they did not want to know. Also had trouble with a $3000 ariston oven got that one taken away. Now I have a Fisher And Paykel, it too retailed for about $3000' it is a pyrolitic one, but I love it :-)
Thanks to all of you who replied to my query regarding ovens. Some good tips. Fortunately the repairman said he can fix my oven, but I will keep in mind the experiences of the helpful people on this site when it comes time to change. Funnily enough one of my gripes about my Ilve that I have had for 16 years was that it takes too long to heat up.. The repairman was able to point out to me that it has a speed heat up function and can go from 0 to about 180 in 8 minutes! I didn't even know!
