Cherries in Black Forest Chocolate

Does anyone know what sort of dried cherries are used in Black Forest chocolate?
I haven't seen anything available that looks remotely like these but would like to.

I don't think they are actually dried cherries, more cherry flavoured gel lollies aren't they?

Could it be morello cherries, I have seen jars of them in the supermarket.

Yes, I think they're Morello cherries; they have a slightly liquid centre and are delicious.

Griz that is so funny as you may well be right.
I didn't stop to question their authenticity but just wondered I would make a black forest slice...
haha.

I was thinking of cherries for Black Forest cake not slice so the Morellos may not suit.

I think they may be too soft Bev but I haven't seen anything dried that has the right flavour.

I've just checked Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Gateaux) on German sites and the recipes I found all use Morello cherries out of jars, well drained. As Bev said, you can find them in supermarkets.

That's a cake though isn't it? can stand the moist texture better than a slice recipe.

Ahh thanks J1, yes I could have gone and looked at the wrapper couldn't I?
I was thinking of creating a black forest slice with chocolate, shortbread chunks and chunks of cherry but I don't know how to get the black forest cherry flavour.
There are dried mixed cherries, cranberries and something else at the supermarket but I don't want the something elses, just cherries and black forest flavoured ones....

Are you looking for a texture like a dried apricot (only cherry flavoured), Helen?

Yes I guess so Griz but not as chewy as dried apricots, more cherry softish.
I love black forest flavour but haven't ever seen semi dried Morel cherries which is ideally what I think I would like.

I haven't seen them in NZ, but dried sour cherries from Middle Eastern food markets have the Morello cherry flavour. I've bought them from BAS in Brunswick, Melbourne, , and you could possibly buy them online from BAS or from iHerb. Make sure you get the stoneless ones.

I don't suppose you'd want to go near those glace cherries, if they'd be suitable? I'm thinking Tasti brand, but I see there's a Homebrand too which is possibly better than Tasti... [www.nzherald.co.nz]

Dried sour cherries such as these? Or are you meaning a very specific kind, TPANDAV?
