I think you are on the right track. A quick Google found this, although I haven't tried it, the science sounds right to me. (Vague memories of soaking potato in saline and sugar solutions in science classes).

I see she uses something like lemonade, I'd think a sugar solution would work just as well without risking a lemony taste to the ham (although she says you don't get that).

Thankyou ladies , I soaked it in a large pot with two peeled potatatoes.
Changed the water after 2 hrs and left it another hour before draining on a
cake rack over night in the fridge. Put a glaze on it and cooked it for 1 hr.
It was really moist and fabulous to eat . Have wonderful Christmas day.
