Another reason to wash your bagged salad prior to consumption....

I was a bit shocked at the length of the food recall notice in today's newspaper. A long, long list of packaged salad mixes under the brands 100% Fresh brand, Fresh Plus brand, Leaderbrand brand, Pam's Fresh Express, Value brand and Value Bag brand. All batches with a Best Before date up to and including 18 MAR 17 are affected by this recall.

May contain listeria.

No reports of illness.

It was interesting to further note from the MPI website that "some affected products (shredded carrot and lettuce) have been supplied to food service customers, including Pita Pit and Subway." [www.mpi.govt.nz]

Yes, I was thinking too, so many cafes put little piles of these salad leaves on the side of your plate...

I can't believe that there is any point in buying those packets of leaves. By the time they have been processed and put on the shelf they are many days old and their only nutritional virtue would be a small amount of fibre. If you can't grow your own then it would be better to buy a fresh cabbage or a whole lettuce and make a salad with that.

Agree TPANDAV - I guess people buy them because you get a mixture of types of lettuce, which you don't if you buy a whole lettuce.

When I haven't got them growing, I buy the 'duo' packs of fresh lettuce - one green and one red.

Does anyone wash their pre-packaged salad greens and whole lettuces before using? I usually wash whole lettuces, and I seldom buy the pre-packaged mixed greens, but when I do I have used them straight out of the package without washing.

Dawn.
