I am back in the market for a new kettle. I had a good old basic stainless version for years but when it came time to replace had no end of trouble with several brands giving tainted water which remained even after 3 or 4 days and multiple cleaning out. Brabantia was particularly bad as I tried 3 different jugs, luckily Briscoes will just replace if theres a problem but very annoying. I ended up buying a Sunbeam model with a blue light but quickly found problems with the lid sticking down, anyway I've had it about 18 months and as of yesterday it now won't work - no idea why, just dead so I'm now dreading looking for a replacement. Recommendations please! I was wondering of some of the more expensive brands like Cuisinart or Kitchen Aid might be good but online reviews seems to find faults with all of them.

Ours is a plain stainless steel Breville similar to this one. [www.briscoes.co.nz]
It's at least six years old and has performed perfectly with no tainted water problems.

I've got a Breville "Crystal Clear" Lite. That is, glass shell and plastic body. It is quiet, boils quickly and does not have a bell (I dislike bells on a kettle), but it is heavy and large. The max fill line is only about half way up the glass pitcher, which leaves a ton of wasted space and extra weight. I got this model because it is lighter than the stainless steel model of the same, but once this has water in it, it is bordering on too heavy to comfortably use. Must be the glass. I say this as a 41yo with no strength or health issues. I have noticed that after 18mo, the top lid assembly has started to lift up some from the glass section. I push it back down, but within a day or so it has lifted again. Not a huge deal but I can see that in time it may cause trouble with the closing mechanism.
I would not recommend the Kambrook glass kettle. I returned 3 because they all leaked from the base. Not a big problem when the water is cold, but when it is boiling and possibly dripping on your toes it is a different story. After that I looked online and found a slew of reviews saying the exact same thing, dating back a couple of years. A shame that Kambrook didn't recognise a clear flaw in their design and do something about it as it was otherwise a good kettle.
Sorry this isn't more about a kettle to recommend, but perhaps one to avoid and something to be aware of with another!

It is disappointing when reading the reviews even just from the Briscoes website how many kettles give problems with leaking, tainted water and faulty lids from very early on, presumably because they are all now manufactured in China and are poorly made. Kettles used to last 15 - 20 years no problem, now they seem to have a lifespan of about 2 years (over the warranty of 1 year for most). I'm leaning towards Cuisinart with a 3 year warranty on special from The Home Essentials in Henderson in Auckland for $179, has more bells and whistles than I need but I'm hoping for reliability with it.

I think the move from corded kettles to cordless (i.e., corded base instead) is partly to blame for the leaking problems. The old kettles also generally had an unattached lid (my parents kettle lid remained in a cupboard for 20+ years). In trying to solve what they think are problems and inconveniences for us, manufacturers create new problems, especially when cost impacts on engineering and design solutions.

I used to housesit for friends and they have a Morphy Richards kettle. Sorry, I don't know the model type but it was metallic darkish blue in colour if that helps! I liked it because it boiled very quietly, which is an important feature for me because I live in a small flat with the kitchen and living area all in one space. I haven't read any reviews of it but ti did the job and didn't have any frustrating features to it.
It depends what features are important to you. I have had a Sunbeam KE745(can't read the last number on the sticker) Cordless Stainless Steel one for some years now. I don't think it's available any more. It's reliable and I've never had any problems with it. My only issues with it are because some of the design features don't fit with my surroundings so it's not the kettle's fault! For example, it is really tall so I can't sit it under the tap fully upright. I bought it because it has a nice, small footprint to fit in my small kitchen, but because it's small, it's also tall and I didn't realise the implication with my taps! The other thing is that it's really loud when it boils, but again that's only annoying because I live in a small space.

We currently have a Russell Hobbs Whisper. I generally go to Briscoes and buy what ever is on special, as I had a run of Sunbeam appliances that died just out of warranty (and some inside). The RH has been around for a while. I paid a bit extra for the "quietness". I doesn't seem very quiet now, but perhaps that's just because I'm used to it. Our last one was very noisy. I decided I'd only buy stainless jugs, as I was concerned about what was leaching out of the "plastic" ones every time I had a cuppa - although they were a lot quieter. I think in my next kitchen I'll have instant hot water. Problem solved. Good luck, Janet

The last time I bought a jug I was determined to spend as much as necessary to get a good one and ended up buying a cheapo one as it had all the things I needed. I recommend going at looking at them in person rather than buying one online, if you were considering that, as it's good being able to heft them to see if they're too heavy. So many reviews for pretty much every appliance seem to be terrible these days. I had real trouble replacing my stove recently with something that had halfway decent reviews, and the same with the microwave I replaced last week.

Hi all, an update to my post of this time last year. I went ahead and bought a Cuisinart Kettle, it has all the bells and whistles and boils the water to different temperatures for different tea types. However a few weeks ago I went to turn it on and it was Dead! I think it was because a few weeks before I had sloshed water over the handle where the control panel for temperature selection is. However, I returned it to the shop I bought it from and they sent it back and after 10 days or so I got a call to say I could come and get a new one with the new 3 year warranty starting again from now. So all in all still quite happy with my purchase (although I had to borrow a spare kettle to use from Mum for 2 weeks!) but I'm not feeling as though this is going to be a necessarily robust appliance in the long haul

I don't think any of them are particularly robust anymore. Although a digital situation on the handle of an appliance that holds water does seem to be a bit of a design flaw, if that was the problem. It would seem like that should be able to withstand getting wet!
My nearly 2yo breville kettle has lost the spring mechanism that opens the lid, so I now have to press the button and flick the kettle so the lid pops open to fill. Hardly a huge deal, but they're not all that cheap and it's just annoying how quickly things break. On the other hand, I've got a 11yo Breville toaster that is in great shape. I sincerely hope it doesn't die any time soon, as the last time I looked, there were no toasters out there anymore that had a crumpet setting!

Hello Nellie, what a long time since we've heard from you! I often think about you as I'm browsing my recipe book for inspiration and come across your recipe for gingernuts. It's the best recipe out; thank you for providing me with a means to make delicious gingernuts for the last few years.
