A cake question

Why would a cake rise more on one side than the other? I baked two cakes and both cakes are higher on one side - Any reasons for this?

1. Did you pour the batter into one side of the tin rather than into the centre?
2. Is your oven shelf level?
3. Is your oven level?
4. Were both tins on the same shelf and it is the outer sides that are higher or lower - could be poor heat circulation in the oven ?

I'd go with #1 and #4 as the most likely culprits...

I'd go with #2 and #3, just because my oven isn't even, so all my cakes are lopsided, when I'm doing a special cake I have to get Mr Griz to pack the shelves up a bit on one side.

That's got to be quite frustrating, Griz..

It is, but we cannot figure out how to straighten things up!

Not mixing it well enough and there is a different consistency of ingredients in one area? Ive had this before too, very annoying. I usually cut the top of the cake off to make it even.
