2, 4, 6 Plum Sauce? December 27, 2018 01:54AM |

My mother often raves about how good my grandmothers Plum Sauce was, and, until recently, the closest thing she has found was Delmaine brand Plum Sauce. Delmaine have unfortunately, stopped making it, and my mother is quite upset.
She said she had asked her mother how to make her Plum Sauce, but the only response they (her and her sister) got was "2, 4, 6". She's has been racking her brain for years trying to figure out what this means. (We're not well off so we can't really buy reams of plums to experiment with) Does anyone here have any ideas as to what Grandma meant by "2, 4, 6"?

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that an excellent recipe for plum sauce was in the first edition of the Edmonds Cook Book. I have an electronic copy of the 3rd edition dated 1914 but there are no preserving recipes in it. However, I googled 2, 4, 6, plum sauce and the first recipe that came up has 2 pints of vinegar, 4lbs of plums and makes 6 bottles of sauce - and it's made by a person calling herself Kiwi Kathy. Here's a link to the recipe in case it tweaks your interest:

Hi Enalya, You can still buy Delmaine Classic Plum Sauce in a 1.15 Kg bottle in their Food Service Catering product line. I have bought it from Gilmours but I see on Delmaines website they have a phone number for the Food Service Products, perhaps you could ring them and see where you could buy it from or buy direct from them.
