Yes, same here. I've been using the lovely big avocados in place of butter on my lunchtime sandwich, as well as in just about every salad at dinnertime. They were also 3 for $4 but yesterday New World didn't have any and Countdown were selling them at one small one for $3.95. They stayed on the shelf!

I went away for a week to Waiheke and when I got back the avocados were $4, the corn which had been 4 for $2 were 2 for $3 and the cherry tomatoes which were $5 for two were $4 each! I wondered what on earth had happened while I was away.My normal online avo supplier avocadotoyou.co.nz had finished their season but fortunately I found a new supplier:
[bayfarms.net.nz]
I got a box of 24 and they worked out at about $2 each and shipping is free. They aren't all that large, but I'm so grateful to have 24 affordable avocados I'm not complaining.

Having spoken to a few growers it seems that our avocado season has prematurely come to an end.
Our hot dry summer is the reason for this.
Yes our A-grade avocados are exported (many to Australia) but if they didn't get exported apparently our market would be flooded and the drop in price would mean that the growers would give up....
There are some interesting seedling avocados around at present that you may have seen. They are a variety of Hass and are absolutely enormous although the stone is the same size as usual avocados. They are shaped like a squash.
As for Reed, they are still to come. They start to ripen now ish.
