Last weekend we were down walking in the forest. The road into the visitors centre is being upgraded and the crew were there on the job. One man was on his break so sat in his truck eating a pie. We cruised past at the required 30kms and both spotted that pie - it looked like steak or mince and cheese, with a lovely crisp pastry.
It was all we could do not to stop and snatch it off him! Or at least have a bite! Ha. Ha.
So......guess what I made today! Chelsea Winter's mince and cheese family pie. My husband requested mashed potatoes and peas to go with it, all the while he was munching and making contented purrs at the same time.
First pie in what feels like a lifetime!
Home made and yummy - no paper bag though.

I did a braised bolar roast this week and turned it into a pie the next day.. added boiled potatoes and a lot of leftover gravy. Made the pastry as well, and it was so so yum. Both my sons had a big wedge cold in their school lunches the following day and declared it hte best lunch item they've had in a long time Sometimes the basics get forgotten in all the fancy rush!

Oh I love a good pie
However I am trying to behave and be gluten free at the same time.
A shop not far from my home does the most delicious Chicken, Cranberry and Brie Pie
Oh dear, even though I know it will upset my system, I will relent one day
I can buy gluten free pies but their appearance and price does not excite me LOL

You are so right Jenna. Our friends have oohed with delight at the old fashioned but tasty dishes served at my table. I used to try and do Masterchef type cuisine but the folks we socialise with just like humble food. Whether it is memories from years gone by or just the comfort and simplicity I don't know. But I love happy guests with happy tummies.
But why do we feel a bit awkward about it - as if there is some expectation that we must all be creating the latest and greatest.

I don't think there's any need to feel awkward about it. Obviously food forums and message boards are going to have more discussions about new and novel ingredients and dishes because we can all learn things, and most cooks are curious about unfamiliar ingredients and techniques. With homely traditional comfort food most of us already know how to prepare it and are familiar with the ingredients, so discussion is less interesting.

I think both types of food have value, you can't beat a good pie, a nice braise, or casserole, done really well those types of foods are classics. I enjoy creating restaurant type meals as well, and I do it for me, it's a creative outlet, and of course I enjoy the compliments. One of our favourite winter dishes is a beef and mushroom slow cooked ragu, which I usually end up serving with a blue cheese mash, it is truly divine comfort food, often requested, and in fact I'll be cooking it up this weekend to take to a friend who is having a double mastectomy soon.

Hi Karen
Any chance of getting your recipe for the Spinach, feta and mushroom pie from you please? I don't eat meat but i do love a pie and they can be scarce to buy without meat. Sometimes Wild Wheat have nice vege pies as do the BP Wild Bean cafe but I get indigestion from theirs . Don't know why perhaps it's the storing and reheating process!? Anyway Thanks Karen
