I have been given two packs of Trader Joe's stone ground white grits which have been sent from America. I have made the American breakfast grits, or porridge as we know it which was very nice, but wondering what else to do with them. Basically they are a coarse polenta. I have used only the instant or fine ground polenta. Anyone have any recipes or ideas for what else to make with them otherwise I feel they are just going to sit in the pantry. Wondering cake or slice mixtures, as well as savoury recipes.
Regards,
Dawn.
PS I have looked on the internet, but didn't find anything particularly appealing - all cheesy mixtures similar to the polenta we make here.

Thank you very much Helen - that's a great idea and one I hadn't thought of! I think I would need to soak them first otherwise they will be really hard little bits throughout the bread. They are even more coarse than coarse polenta.
Prior to cooking the recipe on the packet for American breakfast grits I decided to soak them overnight first and glad I had done so, although the recipe didn't mention having to do that. It makes a nice alternative to porridge but takes a lot longer to cook and porridge is not something we eat for breakfast now.
They were given to me because the recipient of them didn't know what to do with them!
The other use I have thought for them is to soak them and feed them to my pet Rooster!

Dawn.

This looks yummy, I know it is another of the American style savory cheese type recipes but it looks great.

Thank you for all your research Danube, those recipes do look interesting, especially the first one - although I would find a substitute for the chillies, and also tomatoes, hubby is allergic to toms, but that shouldn't be too hard and I like the sound of the addition of an egg. I think the grits I have would need to be soaked first to soften them, and same for the 3rd recipe which is for quick grits - but I do have the fine cornmeal also required in the recipe. I will definitely try the slow cooker recipe as there will be no need to pre-soak the grits. Grateful thanks!

Hi Dawn, here's one last one for a pound cake that uses both Stone Ground White Grits and cornmeal, worth a look. [veganchronicle.blogspot.com]

Thank you so much Danube - that's brilliant and just the sort of recipe I'm looking for. You're a Star!
It looks like a really interesting recipe and I note the comments at the bottom of the page to use less sugar. This is something the men will get here for morning tea - they are my guinea pigs! I note it is mentioned when eating there is a 'crunch' of the grits so it will be very interesting to see whether we like that sort of texture. It is one recipe I won't be soaking the grits!
Many thanks
