If you grow your own broccoli, we know now to leave the broccoli plant in the garden after we've cut the head floret off (for eating). The plant will continue to grow lots of side shoots of broccoli and these keep you in broccoli for weeks. We've had heaps of side shoots this year. Apparently some broccoli are better at providing them than others. I don't know what variety our ones are this year but there's one sold in NZ called Broccoli Side Sprouter and another one called Green Dragon which also produces side shoots.

We do that too. I find that the side shoots have tougher stems than thecentral shoot, so I usually cook only the heads with a couple of cm of stem.
