Its seems as though every can opener I have bought over the last few years is rubbish! Back in the day you would buy one of the small metal ones sold everywhere and they lasted forever! I have a heavy duty looking black plastic one at the moment and after only a few months its already destined for the bin, any recommendations?

I have a great Kuhn Rikon which I found in a weird discount store several years ago. It is the style that doesn't cut the metal, but rather splits the seal, and you then use the inbuilt plier teeth to lift the lid off. This is the same style, but I've not used this particular one. It does however have a 5y warranty!

We hardly ever use cans any more so our can opener languishes in the drawer but it served us well for years prior to abandonment and still works properly if and when I do need it. It's a Good Cook can opener and is probably at least 20 years old. I see from the internet there's lots of different looking Good Cook can openers on the market now but our one looks like this one: [www.enasco.com] So I can't vouch for any of the latest Good Cook can openers but the one they made at least 20 years ago is very good!

I've had a Culinare MagiCan for at least 25yrs and it's still working as new. It's strong - will effortlessly cut through the lids of large, heavy A4 type cans. Readily available from Countdown and specialty stores. [shop.countdown.co.nz]

I'm happy to say I use an electric can opener. I've had my Sunbeam "OpenAll", model CA2800 for many years and it's still going strong. Gives a good clean cut and a magnetic 'arm' grips onto the lid and just lifts it off as you remove the can from the opener. Easy Peasy. Also has a knife sharpener and cord storage. It's available in all the major appliance stores: Briscoes, Noel Leeming, etc, etc. Shop around though; Briscoes have it for $42 (and worth every cent) while Noel Leeming has it for $70!. As it's the same model on sale today as it was when I bought mine, it must be good or they wouldn't still be selling the same model. Why change what works perfectly!
